Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in Utah

In Utah, the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) provides people with disabilities with parking and handicap signs. If you live in Utah and are disabled, you may qualify for a special plaque or plaque.

Permission types

In Utah, if you are disabled, you may qualify for:

  • permanent plaque
  • Temporary plaque
  • Permanent license plate

You may also qualify for an institutional badge if you are a member of an organization that, in the normal course of its business, transports people with disabilities.

Visitors

If you are visiting Utah and have a disability, you will not need to apply for a special plaque or plaque. The State of Utah recognizes permits from your home state and grants you all the rights and privileges they give to Utah with disabilities.

Parking rules

You must obey certain laws.

  • You may not allow anyone else to use your or disability badge - if you do, you are breaking the law and may be fined, and you may lose your badge or badge.

  • You have the right to park in certain designated areas, but you cannot park in emergency vehicle areas – in this respect, the law applies to you in the same way as it does to people without disabilities.

Application

You can request a license plate or disability plaque in person or by mail. In any case, you will have to fill out a disability certificate and a doctor's certificate of incapacity for work. If you are applying for yourself, you must ask your doctor to complete the certification section. If you are applying for an organization, then you must complete it.

Payment Information

The tables are free. License plates cost $15. If you are applying by mail, you must include a three dollar shipping fee. You can apply in person at your local DMV office or mail your application to:

Update

There are renewal rules.

  • Posters have an expiration date and must be updated. The temporary plaque is only valid for six months and cannot be renewed - if your temporary plaque expires, you will have to reapply.

  • If you have a permanent plaque, it still expires - it's only valid for two years. However, you do not need a doctor's note to renew.

  • License plates are updated at the same time as your vehicle is registered.

Lost, stolen or damaged posters

If you lose your nameplate, or if it is stolen or damaged to the point of being unrecognisable, you can replace it. You will have to complete the form again, but you will not need a doctor's note. However, you will need a plate or number plate and will have to pay a $15 replacement fee. Send all documents and fees to the address above.

As a disabled driver in Utah, you are entitled to rights and benefits that are not available to drivers who do not have a disability. However, you must apply for them - they are not automatically issued.
