Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in Wisconsin

If you live in Wisconsin and have a disability, you may be entitled to certain privileges and rights granted to you by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Both organizations offer special permits for both permanent and temporary disability.

Permissions

WisDOT (Wisconsin Department of Transportation) provides special permits for people with a permanent or temporary disability. If you have a disability in Wisconsin, you can get:

  • Special license plate for permanent disability
  • Permanent or temporary disability plate Provided that you own or rent your own vehicle or drive a company vehicle.

Visitors

If you are simply visiting Wisconsin and have a disability permit from another state, Wisconsin will accept that permit and grant you the same rights and benefits as if you were a Wisconsin resident.

Your rights

Your disability plate or plate entitles you to:

  • Park in handicapped spaces
  • Park in other places with temporary restrictions without obeying these restrictions.
  • Park for free at metered locations
  • Refuel your car with gas at the service center for the price of self-service

To use these privileges, you must present a disability badge.

Application

You can apply for a disability permit in person or by mail. You will need to complete an Application for a Permanent Disabled Parking Identification Card or an Application for a Temporary Disabled Parking Identification Card and ask a doctor or other healthcare professional to confirm that you are disabled.

Payment Information

Fees must be paid by money order or check drawn against the 'Registration Fees Trust Fund'. Cash is not accepted. Bring your application and fees to your local DMV office or mail to:

Update

Disabled parking permits expire and will need to be renewed depending on the type of sign or plate you have. Permanent plates must be renewed every four years. Temporary plates are valid for six months. License plates are valid.

All disabled parking permits must be renewed. The validity period depends on the type of your nameplate or nameplate:

Replacement

If you lose your Special Permit, or if it is stolen or lost or damaged to the point where it cannot be identified, you will need to replace it. There is no easy way around this - you will have to reapply and go through the entire application process again, including the medical examination. Needless to say, it's best if you take care of it first.

As a resident of Wisconsin, if you are disabled, you are entitled to a number of rights and privileges. However, you must apply for them, and if you have received special numbers and permits, you must take care of them. Otherwise, you will have to reapply.
