Laws and Permits for Disabled Drivers in South Carolina

In South Carolina, people with disabilities are entitled to certain parking privileges. These privileges take precedence over the rights of other motorists and are provided for by law.

Summary of South Carolina Disabled Driver Laws

In South Carolina, disabled drivers are eligible for special plates and plates issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you are disabled in South Carolina, you may qualify for special parking spaces and other benefits.

Permission types

In South Carolina, you can get a permanent or temporary disability permit. A Temporary Disability Permit gives you certain benefits while you are disabled. If you have a permanent disability, your benefits last longer. Disabled veterans are also entitled to special privileges.

Rules

If you have a disability permit in South Carolina, you are the only person allowed to use disabled parking spaces. This privilege does not apply to your passengers or anyone else who may be using your vehicle.

You are allowed to park in handicapped spaces, as well as in other places that are not marked as disabled, without paying.

Visitors

If you are a disabled person visiting South Carolina, then the State of South Carolina will respect your or disabled signs in the same way that it does in its own state.

Application

You can apply for a South Carolina disability number or permit by completing the Application for a Disability Sign and License Plate. You must provide a letter from your doctor along with your prescription. The fee is $1 per poster and $20 per plate. License plates for veterans are issued free of charge, subject to proof of eligibility.

Also, if you work for an organization that typically transports people with disabilities in a car, van, or bus, you can also get a license plate or plate for your vehicle. You can obtain it by filling out an organization disconnection application form and license plate and mailing it to:

SC Department of Motor Vehicles

Mailbox 1498

Blythewood, SC 29016

Update

All numbers and permits will expire. Permanent plates are valid for four years. Temporary plates are good for a year and can be replaced at your doctor's discretion. Disability certificates are valid for two years. If you renew before the expiration date, you will not need to provide a new doctor's certificate, but if you delay your renewal and the permit expires, you will need to provide a certificate.

Disability sheets are updated simultaneously with the renewal of registration.

Lost plaques and plaques

If you lose your nameplate or nameplate, or if it is stolen, you will need to reapply.

As a South Carolina resident with a disability, you are entitled to certain rights and privileges. However, the state will not automatically issue them to you. You must apply, and you must renew it periodically, in accordance with state law.
