Windshield laws in Idaho

If you drive in Idaho, there are many different traffic rules that you must follow to stay legal and safe. However, you also need to make sure that your windshield is also compliant. The following windshield laws in Idaho must be followed to avoid fines and fines.

windshield requirements

The Idaho Motor Vehicle Code does not clearly state whether windshields are required. However, when windshields are present, there are requirements, including:

  • Any vehicle with a windshield must have working wipers capable of clearing rain, snow and other moisture.

  • Any vehicle that has a windshield should have wipers that are serviced and in good working order.

  • All wind and other windows must be made of safety glazing, i.e. glass combined with other materials or treated in such a way that it poses a significantly reduced risk of glass breaking or shattering if it is broken or impacted.

Obstacles

Idaho also regulates any possible obstacles on the windshield:

  • There must be no posters, signs, or any other opaque material on the windshield that prevents the driver from clearly seeing highways and intersecting highways.

  • Drivers may not use tape or transparent materials as a replacement for windshields.

Window tinting

Idaho also regulates the tinting of the windshield and other windows of all vehicles.

  • On the windshield, only non-reflective tinting is allowed in the area above the AC-1 line, provided by the manufacturer.

  • Reflective tinting cannot be used on the windshield, but is allowed on the front and rear side windows, provided that its reflectivity does not exceed 35%.

Cracks and chips

Idaho has strict laws regarding any windshield cracks. Although the laws are not listed in the vehicle code, the Idaho Court of Appeals has ruled that any crack in the windshield makes a vehicle unsafe. Thus, any cracked windshield is illegal in Idaho.

There are no rules for chips. However, federal regulations require that the chips be less than ¾ inch in diameter and that there be no other areas of damage within three inches.

Violations

Any driver stopped for violating Idaho windshield laws can be fined between $67 and $90 per violation. While this amount may seem small, repeated violations can result in demerit points against your license, as well as legal fees if you choose to contest the citations. Instead of driving with a windshield that violates Idaho laws, it's much easier and safer to take the time to repair your windshield so you're roadworthy.
