Windshield Laws in Massachusetts

Massachusetts motorists are required to follow various traffic laws when driving on roads and highways throughout the state. However, in addition to these traffic rules, drivers must also ensure that their car's windshield complies with the rules. Below you will find the Massachusetts windshield laws you must follow.

windshield requirements

  • All vehicles must have windshields in order to pass the mandatory inspection.

  • All vehicles must have windshield wipers to remove snow, rain and other moisture. Wipers must be operated by the driver and have their blades in good working order in order to pass a mandatory vehicle safety check.

  • To pass the safety check, the wiper washer must be in working order.

  • All windshields must be made from safety glass, which is glass that has been treated or combined with other materials to reduce the chance of glass shattering or breaking compared to flat glass.

Obstacles

  • Do not place stickers, posters or signs on the windshield or other windows that interfere with the driver's view.

  • Any vehicle that has window coverings, such as blinds or other rear window coverings, must have both outside rear view mirrors in order to provide a good view of the road.

Window tinting

  • Windshields may only have a non-reflective tint along the top six inches of the windshield.

  • The front side, rear side and rear windows can be tinted provided they allow more than 35% of the available light to pass through.

  • If the rear window is tinted, both side mirrors must be installed in the vehicle to ensure proper visibility.

  • A reflective shade is allowed, but not more than 35%.

  • Additional windshield tint may be permitted in situations of photosensitivity or sensitivity to light with an approved physician's recommendation after review by a medical advisory board.

Cracks and chips

  • Windshields cannot have chips larger than a quarter.

  • No cracks or areas of damage are allowed in the path of the wipers when cleaning the windshield.

  • Cracks, chips, discoloration and other damage must not prevent the driver from clearly seeing the roadway and crossing roadways.

  • It is also important to understand that it is generally up to the ticketing officer to decide whether cracks, chips or areas of damage will prevent the driver from seeing the roadway.

Violations

Failure to comply with any of the above windshield laws may result in a fine. For the first and second offenses, a fine of up to $250 is provided. A third violation and any subsequent violations will result in suspension of your driver's license for up to 90 days.
