Windshield Laws in New York

If you are a driver with a New York City license, you know that you must obey numerous traffic laws when driving on the roads. While these rules are for the safety of you and others, there are rules that govern your car's windshield for the same reason. The following are New York City windshield laws that drivers must follow to avoid fines and potentially costly fines.

windshield requirements

New York City has strict requirements for both the windshield and related devices.

  • All vehicles moving on the roadway must have windshields.

  • All vehicles must have windshield wipers capable of removing snow, rain, sleet and other moisture to provide a clear view through the glass while driving.

  • All vehicles must have safety glass or safety glass material for windshields and windows, i.e. glass that is either processed or made from other materials to significantly reduce the chance of glass shattering or breaking on impact or in a crash compared to traditional sheet glass. .

Obstacles

New York City also has laws in place to ensure that motorists can see clearly when driving on the roadway.

  • No motorist may drive a vehicle on a roadway that has posters, signs, or any other opaque material on the windshield.

  • Posters, signs and opaque materials may not be placed on windows on either side of the driver.

  • Only legally required stickers or certificates may be affixed to the windshield or front side windows.

Window tinting

Window tinting is legal in New York City if it meets the following requirements:

  • Non-reflective tinting is permitted on the windshield along the top six inches.

  • Tinted front and rear side windows must provide more than 70% light transmission.

  • The tint on the rear window can be of any darkness.

  • If the rear window of any vehicle is tinted, dual side mirrors must also be fitted to provide a view behind the vehicle.

  • Metallic and mirror tinting is not allowed on any window.

  • Each window must have a sticker stating that it meets legal tint requirements.

Cracks, chips and defects

New York also limits the possible cracks and chips that are allowed on a windshield, although not concisely:

  • Vehicles on the roadway must not have cracks, chips, discoloration or defects that impair the driver's view.

  • The broad wording of this requirement means that the ticket clerk decides whether cracks, chips or defects affect the driver's ability to see while driving.

Violations

Drivers in New York City who do not comply with the above laws are subject to a fine and demerit points added to their driver's license.
