Filling the camper with water in winter

Unfortunately, holidays in Polish ski resorts still involve (mostly) being in nature. There are no designated parking spaces, which means there are no year-round service stations. Campervan and caravan owners have to deal with problems related to energy and water shortages. And if low temperatures do not affect the ability to transmit electricity, then managing water resources during winter road trips becomes a real problem. Popular "summer" spots, such as gas station taps, are closed and secured for the winter.

First of all, it is worth using the CamperSystem implementation map. It is a supplier of, among other things, year-round service stations. There we are confident that even in subzero temperatures we will be able to carry out basic “maintenance” of the camper or trailer. The website also offers the option to select ready-made investments that are open all year round - this is a big help when we're on the go.

Option number two is campsites open all year round, which offer the possibility of service for a fee, without the need to stop and pay a fixed daily rate for accommodation. However, we advise you to call immediately and inquire about service availability, especially the possibility of fresh water refilling. An example of a campsite in Oravice (Slovakia), which we visited last week, showed that there is indeed a service point, but water has to be filled from the lower toilets.

Idea number three is gas stations and gas stations with outdoor restrooms. In them we often see taps, which are usually used to draw water into a bucket and wash the floors. However, there are two things to remember:

  • firstly, water costs money - let's not "steal" it, just ask the staff if we can fill the camper's tank. Let's leave a tip, buy coffee or a hot dog. Let's not forget to argue that the faucet actually exists, we have already found it and are simply asking about the possibility of using it.
  • secondly, when traveling in winter, we must arm ourselves with a set of adapters that will allow us to connect the hose even to a regular tap. The cost should not exceed 50 zlotys.

This adapter will allow us to refill water from any tap. Literally everything

Always have a long garden hose on board your camper or trailer. It is worth having two sets for the winter and summer seasons. It was not uncommon when using mops on the highway to find a camper parked many, many meters away. If it were not for the long hose, we would have to use “manual” solutions. So which ones? Watering can, plastic tank, special container for autotourists. In any case, these things will help us fill the tank in an emergency, but you have to take our word for it that filling, for example, 120 liters of water is not a pleasant task.
