If you need a crankshaft pulley marking, you can buy the original (23124-2F000) or an equivalent (23124-2F010).

And so the procedure for replacing the Sorento timing chain looks like this:

It will be necessary to immediately remove the upper crankcase.

G4KD Timing Replacement

The next part to be removed is the timing belt cover (we unscrew five screws, we need a “12” key).

Then we unscrew and remove the top cover of the fan (here we unscrew 2 bolts with a key to “8” from the side of the battery, 2 more from the side of the air chamber under the expansion tank, 1 additional bolt with a key to “10” from the side of the battery and so on, always towards the air filter). We unscrew all these screws, after unscrewing the upper support of the expansion tank (screw 10).

Therefore, it will not work to remove the sump and expansion tank, so move the tank towards the passenger compartment and remove the sump from the side of the air filter.

Next, we unscrew the nine bolts on the distributor cover (four from the bottom, not the most convenient) with a socket wrench to “12” and remove the cover (sitting on two guides), the second guide from the bottom in the opposite direction, then the cover in these places should be raised evenly (you will see special grooves).

Then rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks match!

G4KD Timing Replacement

There are two ways to get to the crankshaft pulley bolt (24):

1st. It is necessary to remove the fan and the coupling by unscrewing it. To do this, unscrew the 4 bolts “10” of the water pump pulley with a key.

By the way, slightly unscrewing the pulley on the belt will slip, so with the second hand you need to press the belt close to the pulley and unscrew it (two bolts at a time), then release the belt and unscrew the third bolt, slightly turn the pulley half a turn so that the other two are screwed on correctly. To do this, press the belt again with your hand and turn it.

So we take the fan very carefully and put it only vertically without fail (since you can’t put the fan horizontally)!

2nd. If you remove the front of the engine cover and get access to the crankshaft pulley bolt. Without a viewing hole, the first option would be optimal.

Therefore, we turn the crankshaft until the camshaft gear marks match the mark on the front cover of the engine, and the pump gear mark is in the same position (the mark is on the gear itself, and not on the engine).

On the right side, we unscrew the chain damper, fixed with a screw at “12”, and on the other side it rests against the rail, then remove it.

Then we unscrew the second tensioner (shock absorber), fixed with two screws to “10”, and remove it.

The tension shoe is attached to one at "12", unscrew and remove. Here's what we'll be filming:

Then rotate the crankshaft so that the right side of the chain runs to the pump gear (from the right camshaft gear). The chain should be removed starting from the left camshaft sprocket.

The chain must first be put on the gear of the right camshaft, then on the pump gear and on the second camshaft. If you have a chain with a copper link, it should match the markings on the gears.

So there is nothing special to do - we collect and arrange everything filmed in the reverse order. Place the chain cover on the sealant.

Signs, causes and consequences of failure of the timing chain

The chain drive is hidden inside the engine, unlike the toothed belt drive, which is located outside the power unit. This can be considered both an advantage and a disadvantage. On the one hand, the isolated mechanism produces less noise and is richly lubricated with oil, which increases the life of the assembly. On the other hand, maintenance and replacement of the timing impeller becomes difficult, since for a visual inspection of the mechanism it is also necessary to remove the valve cover.

A timing chain malfunction is expressed primarily in the appearance of a characteristic noise under the hood with the Kia engine running. This sound is heard from the side of the gas distribution mechanism, it is extremely difficult to confuse it with some other noise.

Timing device Kia Sorento 2.4 petrol

The gas distribution mechanism of the Sorento engine with a volume of 2,4 liters has a chain drive and is quite reliable. The diagram of the unit itself is shown in the image below. The torque from the camshaft sprocket is transmitted to the camshaft sprockets. The shock absorber, the tensioner shoe and the tensioner itself are involved in the process. See image diagram.

Characteristics of the Kia Sorento 2.4 petrol engine

  • Working volume - 2359 cm3
  • The number of cylinders - 4
  • Number of valves - 16
  • Cylinder diameter - 88mm
  • Piston stroke - 97mm
  • Timing Chain Drive (DOHC)
  • HP power (kW) - 175 (129) at 6000 rpm
  • Torque: 225 Nm at 3750 rpm
  • Maximum speed - 190 km / h
  • Acceleration to the first hundred - 10,8 seconds
  • Fuel type: gasoline AI-95
  • Compression ratio - 10,5
  • Fuel consumption in the city - 11,2 liters
  • Fuel consumption on the highway - 6,9 l
  • Combined fuel consumption - 8,5 liters

It is worth saying a few words about the first generation Kia Sorento, because there is a completely different 2,4-liter engine. Sorento I was equipped with a 16-liter 2,4-valve engine with a cast-iron block and a timing belt, this engine produced 139 hp. (192 Nm) and has an excellent motor resource. I repeat once again that structurally this unit is close to the gasoline aspirated Mitsubishi 4G64.

When to change the timing chain Kia Sorento

The need to replace the timing chain on the Kia Sorento is indicated by a strong noise under the hood, uneven engine operation, as well as a warning light indicating uneven engine operation.

The sales network of Kia Sorento serves about 100 km, the timing belt of passenger cars serves an average of 000 to 20 km.

Engine noise can be caused by loose chain tension and/or worn related parts. In addition to the timing chain of Kia Sorento, the camshaft chain shoe, timing chain guide, valve cover gasket, timing chain tensioner, crankshaft gear, fuel injector gasket, engine valve cover gasket, chain, etc. are subject to wear, it is recommended to change the details of the data.
