Replacing pads on Hyundai Accent

In this short article, you will learn how to independently replace the brake pads on a Hyundai Accent (front and rear). All work can be done independently, there is nothing complicated in them. To repair, you will need a set of tools, a jack and basic skills. But in order to carry out repairs, you need to at least in general terms know the structure of the entire system.

Removing the front brakes

The design of the front wheel caliper is shown in the figure. Recommended tightening torques for all threaded connections are also indicated. The order of work when removing the brake mechanisms on the Hyundai Accent:

1. We unscrew the bolt from below and lift the entire caliper up. Secure it with wire so as not to damage the hose.
2. Take out the pads.

Before carrying out these manipulations, it is necessary to loosen the bolts on the wheels, raise the car with a jack. After that, you can completely remove the wheel. Be sure to install bumpers under the rear wheels to keep the car from rolling. And never press the brake pedal with the caliper removed; this will cause the pistons to come out and you will have to replace the entire mechanism.

Diagnostics of the state of structural elements

Now you can check if the brake pads are dirty or worn. The pads should be about 9 mm thick. But the whole system will work with pads where the pads are 2mm thick. But this is the maximum allowable value, it is not recommended to use such gaskets.

If you are replacing pads on a Hyundai Accent, you need to do this on the entire axle. When replacing on the front left side, install the new ones on the right side. And when removing the pads and reinstalling them, it is recommended to mark the place so as not to get confused later. But pay attention to the fact that the lining is not damaged.

Shoe installation procedure

When installing the front pads on the Hyundai Accent, you must perform the following manipulations:

1. Insert clips to hold the pads.
2. Install clamp pads. Please note that the pad on which the wear sensor is installed is installed directly on the piston.
3. Now you need to insert the piston into the caliper so that the new pads can be installed. This can be done both with a special tool (designation 09581–11000) and with improvised means: a bracket, a mounting sheet, etc.
4. Install new pads. Joints should be located on the outside of the metal. Do not apply grease to the running surfaces of the rotor or pads.
5. Tighten the bolt. It is recommended to tighten with a torque of 22..32 N*m.

Rear brakes: removal

The design is shown in the figure. The disassembly procedure is as follows:

1. Remove the rear wheel and drum.
2. Remove the clip holding the shoe, then the lever and self-adjusting spring.
3. You can remove the pad adjuster only by pressing on them.
4. Remove pads and return springs.

Diagnostics of the rear brakes

Now you can diagnose the state of the mechanisms:

1. 1. First you need to measure the diameter of the drum with a caliper. Of course, you must measure the inside diameter, not the outside. The maximum value must be 200 mm.
   2. Using a dial indicator, measure the beats of the drum. It should be no more than 0,015 mm.
   3. Measure the thickness of the overlaps: the minimum value should be 1 mm. If less, then you need to change the pads.
   4. Carefully inspect the pads: they should not be dirt, signs of excessive wear and damage.

1. Inspect the shoe drives - working cylinders. They must not contain traces of brake fluid.
2. Carefully inspect the protector; It should also not be damaged or show signs of excessive wear.
3. Make sure the pads are evenly attached to the drum.

If everything is normal, then replacing the rear brake pads with a Hyundai Accent is not required. If you find damaged items, you must replace them.

Installing the rear pads

Lubricate the following points before assembly:

1. The point of contact between the shield and the block.
2. The point of contact between the pad and the base plate.

Recommended lubricants: NLGI #2 or SAE-J310. Other pad installation steps:

1. First install the shelf to support the back.
2. Install the return springs on the blocks.
3. After installing the pads and assembling the entire mechanism, you need to squeeze the handbrake lever several times. This will allow you to adjust the brakes on both rear wheels at the same time.
