Replacing piston rings on a VAZ 2107 with your own hands

VAZ 2107 engines, including all other “classic” models, are capable of running up to 300 km without major repairs. Of course, not every owner is able to monitor his car in such a way as to achieve such results, but it is worth striving for this.

But often many people repair their motors much earlier. This is due to premature wear of the piston group: cylinder walls, piston rings, both oil scraper and compression. Compression in this situation usually drops sharply and falls below 10 atmospheres, of course, it is necessary to repair the engine. This manual will walk you through the procedure for replacing piston rings. But first you need to perform preparatory steps:

When all the preparatory measures are completed, you can start working. First of all, we unscrew the two nuts securing the connecting rod caps, and for this we need a knob with a head of 14. Since the nuts are screwed in with a large torque, it may be necessary to build up the lever with a pipe.

Now you can easily remove the cover and put it aside. But keep in mind that during installation you need to put everything in its place, that is, do not confuse the covers of different pistons!

When this is done, you can try to squeeze the piston outward by pressing on the connecting rod bolts. But look that there are no distortions, that is, that the connecting rod is in a straight position. It may be necessary to turn the crankshaft slightly by its pulley to do this.

Personally, by my own example, I can say that it is very convenient to squeeze out the piston using a wooden block, resting it against the connecting rod bolt. After that, it should easily come out and take it out by hand to the end, as shown in the photo below:

Acting with extreme caution, we finally remove the piston assembly from the connecting rods outward:

Next, we proceed directly to replacing the rings, if necessary. To do this, slightly pry the edge of the upper compression ring and disengage it from the engagement of the groove, as shown below:

To completely release the ring, it is worth carefully pulling it out of the groove in a circle:

The remaining rings are removed in the same way. The lowest - oil scraper is likely to be collapsible, so keep this in mind. Next, you need to measure the gap between the ends of the ring by inserting it into the cylinder:

It is generally accepted that the maximum allowable, that is, the critical gap, should not be more than 1 mm. And the optimal working gap is 0,25-0,45 mm. If, after measurements, it turned out that the values ​​are not allowed for use, the rings must be urgently replaced.

Before installing on the pistons, its grooves must be completely cleaned of carbon deposits. Better to do this with an old ring, it fits perfectly for this. Then you can put new rings in place. And when you insert the piston back into the cylinder, be sure to lubricate everything with engine oil, not sparing it.

Prices for good rings that cover more than 50 km can cost at least 000 rubles. It is imperative that after assembling the VAZ 1000 engine, it is necessary to run it in, at least for the first 2107 km to operate the car in a gentle mode.
