Timing belt replacement for Opel Astra H 1,6 Z16XER

Finally, my old friend exchanged his rusty bucket for a normal car and immediately came to our sales stand for inspection. So we have an Opel Astra H 1.6 Z16XER replacing the timing belt, rollers, oil and filters.

Tools and fixtures

Since this is an Opel, in addition to the usual keys, we will also need Torx heads, but they lie in every tool box for a long time. We will also make a clutch lock to change the valve timing from one bolt with eight and two washers, if this method seems unreliable to someone, then you can buy clamps in any online store for only 950 rubles. We’ll make a reservation right away that if the car is equipped with a manual gearbox, then there will be no difficulties, but if it’s a robot, then you will have to block the crankshaft or use a pneumatic wrench. The pump was not changed, as it is driven by the alternator belt. It took an hour and a half to replace the timing belt with a cup of tea.

In fact, the patient himself.

Under the hood is a 1,6-liter engine called the Z16XER.

Step by step guide

First, disconnect the air filter with pipes from the throttle.

We remove the right front wheel, plastic side protection and raise the engine through the bar. We remove the belt from the generator, with a nineteen key, for a special ledge, turn the tension roller, thereby loosening the belt. The photo has already been taken.

Remove the engine mount.

We disassemble the support.

Remove the top timing belt cover.

Remove the central part of the plastic protection.

Set top dead center

We turn the crankshaft by the screw, always clockwise, until the marks of the crankshaft pulley and the lower protection coincide.

They are not very visible, but it will not be difficult to find them.

On the top of the camshaft couplings, the marks must also match.

Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt. If the transmission is manual, this procedure will not be a problem. We substitute the bumpers under the wheels, turn on the fifth one, insert a specially trained screwdriver into the brake disc under the caliper and unscrew the bolt with a slight movement of the hand. But if the robot is like in our case, then a wrench helps us, and if there is no current, then we make a crankshaft pulley stopper. In the corner we drill two holes for the figure eight and insert two bolts there, tightening them with nuts, these bolts are finally inserted into the pulley holes. You will get the dimensions yourself by measuring the distance between the holes. The latch is shown schematically in the photo, any hole can be used with a red rectangle.

Remove the pulley and lower timing belt guard. On the left we see the tension roller, on the right the bypass.

We check the marks on the camshafts, and if they are missing, we lower them. On the crankshaft sprockets, the marks, in turn, must also match.

Our Russian lock was installed on the camshafts and, just in case, the old belt was marked.

You can buy special clamps, they can be found on Ali or on Vseinstrumenty.ru.

Get it like this.

Using a hexagon, turn the timing belt tensioner pulley counterclockwise, thereby loosening the belt and remove the belt and rollers.

Installing a new timing belt

We put new rollers in place, and the tension roller has a protrusion on the body, which should fall into the groove during installation.

Here in this groove.

We checked all the marks again and installed a new timing belt, first on the crankshaft sprocket, bypass roller, camshafts and idler idler. Don't forget the direction of rotation indicated on the strap. Let's take our fixer.

We check the marks and, having installed the lower protective cover and the crankshaft pulley, we turn the engine twice and check all the marks again. If everything matches, install all other parts in the reverse order of removal. In principle, there is nothing complicated here, the main thing is attention.
