Replacement steering rods BMW E39

Detailed photo and video instructions on how to replace the steering rods on a BMW E39 car with your own hands. Very often, owners of the E39 are faced with play in the tie rod joint, you can ride with it, but if you don’t change the tie rods in time, the steering rack will soon fail, and the price of a new part is a little less than 2000 euros.

If you are using a jack to raise the vehicle, be sure to apply the parking brake and place chocks under the wheels. In the video, the whole process goes “without problems”, since this has already been done before, so as not to waste time later, showing how difficult it is to unscrew this or that nut. If the car has been in operation for a long time, you will definitely encounter the problem of unscrewing one or another part, so always pre-clean the threaded connections with a wire brush, spray WD-40 or other penetrating lubricant on them, wait a while and only then start work.

Jack up the car, remove the front wheels. With two keys, one for 16 and one for 24, we start the lock nut:

With a puller, remove the steering tip from the seat; otherwise, it can be removed with a hammer. We unscrew the steering tip by hand, while it is best to hold the lock nut with a wrench:

This is done on both sides. We remove the pen. Using a 32 key, we tear out the steering rack rod bracket:

Then we unscrew with the help of hand strength, we try to count the number of revolutions. We take a new tie rod, lubricate its fasteners with copper or graphite grease, put it in place of the old one, turn it exactly the same number of revolutions as we unscrewed. We mount in the reverse order. The first step after performing this repair should go to the similarity collapse.
