Replacement of steering tips on Kalina and Grant
Typically, steering tips go about 70-80 thousand kilometers with a more or less gentle operation of the car. But if we consider that the quality of our roads leaves much to be desired, then we have to replace them a little more often. On the example of my Kalina, I can say that at 40 km, there was an unpleasant knock from the front of the car on the dirt road, and the steering wheel became loose.
Since Kalina and Granta, the models are essentially the same, it is possible to replace the steering tips using the example of one of these machines. To complete this repair, we need the following tools:
- Key for 17 and 19 open-end or cap
- Socket heads for 17 and 19
- Torque wrench
- Pry bar or special puller
- Hammer
- Pliers
- Collar with extension
If you want to see how this procedure looks live, so to speak, then watch my video instruction:
And below the same work will be described only with a step-by-step photo report. By the way, here, too, everything is chewed up to the smallest details, so you can figure it out without much difficulty.
So, first of all, you need to jack up the front of the car from the side where you plan to replace the tips and remove the wheel:
After that, it is necessary to turn the steering wheel all the way so that it is more convenient to unscrew the tip. If you change from the left side, then you need to turn it to the right. Next, we lubricate all joints with penetrating grease:
Now, with a 17 key, unscrew the attachment of the tip to the rod, as shown clearly in the photo below:
After that, bend the cotter pin with pliers and take it out:
And unscrew the nut with a 19 key:
Then we take the pry bar and rest between the lever and the tip, and try to compress the tip, with great effort pushing the pry bar down with jerks, and at the same time with the other hand we hammer on the lever with a hammer (in the place where the finger sits):
After a short action, the tip should get out of its seat and the result of the work done will be something like this:
Next, you need to unscrew the tip from the tie rod, for this you need to twist it clockwise, gripping it thoroughly with your hands:
Be sure to count the number of revolutions until completely unscrewed, as this will help to keep the toe-in of the wheels during replacement.
After that, we screw on a new tip with the same number of revolutions, put back all the nuts and cotter pins:
The nut that secures the tip to the steering knuckle must be tightened with a torque wrench with a force of at least 18 Nm. The price of the new parts that we changed came out to be about 600 rubles per pair. After the replacement, the car becomes much better with regards to control, the steering wheel becomes tight and there are no more bumps.
