Chevrolet Lanos CV Joint Replacement

In this article, we have prepared for you instructions on how to replace CV joints with Chevrolet Lanos, aka Daewoo Lanos and ZAZ Chance. There is nothing complicated in the replacement process, but it is worth taking into account some tips that will help you quickly and easily replace the CV joint on the Lanos.

Tool

In order to replace the CV joint you will need:

  • balloon key;
  • jack;
  • a strong knob with a head of 30 (for Lanos with a 1.5 engine; for ZAZ Chance, a nut can be installed at 27; for a Lanos with a 1.6 engine, you will need a 32 head);
  • pliers;
  • key for 17 + ratchet with a head for 17 (or two keys for 17);
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • head, or a key for 14.

Removing the old CV joint

First you need to unscrew the hub nut, which is not always easy to give in. We remove the wheel, take out the cotter pin that locks the nut, then there are 2 ways:

  • put a knob with a 30 (27 or 32) head on a hub nut, it is also advisable to use an extension, for example a piece of pipe. The assistant presses the brake and you try to rip off the hub nut;
  • if there is no assistant, then after removing the cotter pin, install the wheel back into place, after removing the central cap of the alloy disk (if stamping, then you do not need to remove anything). We fasten the wheel, lower the car from the jack and try to unscrew the hub nut.

Next, you need to unscrew the brake caliper, it is better to unscrew the guides, since it is much more difficult to unscrew the bolts securing the caliper bracket due to the fact that they stick with time, and also a hexagon is used there, which is likely to tear off the edges. Therefore, using a 14 wrench, unscrew the 2 caliper guides, pull the main part of the caliper from the brake disc and put it on some kind of stand, but do not leave it hanging on the brake hose, as this can damage it.

Now, in order to disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower arm, unscrew the 3 bolts located at the end of the lower arm (see photo) using a wrench and a 17 head.

Thus, we practically freed the entire rack, it can be taken to the side. Moving the rack towards you, we pull the hub off the shaft. An old CV joint with a boot remains on the shaft.

The CV joint is removed very simply, it must be knocked out with a hammer, hitting several times on the wide part of the CV joint. After that, remove the boot and the retaining ring, it is located in the groove, in the middle of the spline part of the shaft.

That's it, now the shaft is ready to install a new CV joint.

What is included in the set of the new CV joint for Chevrolet Lanos

Complete with a new CV joint on the Chevrolet Lanos comes:

  • the joint itself (grenade);
  • retaining ring
  • anther;
  • two clamps;
  • hub nut with cotter pin;
  • grease for the CV joint.

Installing a new CV joint

First you need to prepare the CV joint for installation, for this to clog it with grease, how to do it? The lubricant usually comes in a tube. Insert the tube into the central hole and squeeze out the grease until the grease appears in the balls of the CV joint, and also crawls out from under the tube.

Do not forget to wipe the shaft from dirt and sand, put on the boot, it is obvious that the wider side is outward (do not forget to put on the clamps in advance).

Next, you need to install the retaining ring into the groove of the CV joint (there is a special hole in the CV joint so that the ears of the retaining ring fall there, so you cannot make a mistake).

Advice! As practice shows, in some CV joint kits, the retaining rings come across a little more than required. This leads to the fact that it will not be possible to drive the CV joint into place, it will rest against the ring and will not be able to slip to the desired point. In this case, a slight sharpening of the ring with a grinder helped, that is, by doing so, we reduced the outer diameter of the retaining ring.

After installing the ring, insert the CV joint onto the shaft. And when the CV joint rests against the retaining ring, it must be pushed into place with a hammer blow.

Attention! Do not hit the edge of the CV joint directly with a hammer, this will damage the thread and then you will not be able to tighten the hub nut. You can use any flat spacer, or you can screw the old nut onto the new CV joint so that the nut goes in about half and you will hit the nut itself without damaging the thread.

After pushing the CV joint into place, check if it is stuck (that is, if the retaining ring is in place). The CV joint should not walk on the shaft.

The assembly of the entire mechanism takes place in the reverse order, similar to disassembly.

Advice! Before leaving, leave the wheel where the CV joint was changed, put stops under the wheels just in case, start the car and engage first gear, the wheel will start to rotate and the grease in the CV joint will warm up and spread to all parts of the mechanism.

Happy renovation!

Questions and answers:

How to change a grenade on a Chevrolet Lanos? The ball joint and the hub nut are unscrewed (not completely). The drive is pulled out of the gearbox, the hub nut is unscrewed. The retaining ring is opened and the CV joint is knocked out. A new part is put in, grease is stuffed, a boot is put on.

How to change the boot on a Chevrolet Lanos? To do this, you need to do the same procedure as when replacing the CV joint, only the grenade does not change. The boot is fixed with clamps on the drive shaft and the grenade body.

How to knock out the CV joint from the shaft? To do this, you can use a hammer if there is no special tool for pressing out. The blow must be sure so that the edges of the part do not splash.
