Replacing spark plugs - how to do it efficiently?

Replacing spark plugs is a minor but necessary operation if you want your car to function properly. Even in some Formula 1 competitions, it is the failure of this component that leads to a loss. In a conventional car, these elements are no less important. Modern candles serve from 30 to 100 thousand. km. What are spark plugs in a car?

Spark plugs are responsible for igniting gasoline and air in the engine, which in turn should start the unit in operation. To do this, a high-voltage pulse is directed to the spark plugs through the ignition coil or coils. Usually there are as many spark plugs as there are cylinders in a car, but a lot depends on the type of engine. This structural element of the car can be assembled in various ways. Therefore, the replacement of spark plugs will be slightly different depending on the vehicle.

The method for replacing spark plugs is usually specified by the vehicle manufacturer. You should find all the information you need in the maintenance instructions for your model. Usually on new spark plugs you can drive up to 60-10 km. km, but you should check it out. It is also worth noting that gas-powered vehicles require much more frequent replacement of this element, i.e. even every XNUMX XNUMX km. km. Try to change your spark plugs as often as possible. Thanks to this, you will extend the life of your engine and enjoy a functional car for longer.

If you are an experienced driver, you will immediately understand that something is wrong. Worn out spark plugs will cause the car to stop running smoothly:

  • you will begin to feel jerks and the engine will run unevenly;
  • the car will lose power, which you will especially notice when accelerating hard, for example, when you are trying to overtake another vehicle. 

A problem starting your car may also indicate that it's time to replace your spark plugs. Remember that spark plugs get dirty faster if you use lower quality fuel.

Candles are not expensive. They cost from 10 to 5 euros per piece, and the upper limit is the price of branded products. Of course, newer high-end cars also have more expensive components. If you have a cheaper, more popular, and of course slightly older car model, you can fit it with less expensive spark plugs. However, always choose the ones recommended for your car model. You need to know the brand of the car and the year of its release. The size of the engine, its power and the diameter of the spark plug thread are also important. Also check which spark plug model your car manufacturer recommends. 

Replacing glow plugs on a warm or cold engine?

Changing spark plugs in your own garage is possible. It's not difficult at all, but before you get down to business, do not forget:

  • work on a cold engine;
  • turn off the ignition. 

This is the only way to ensure your safety while working. Only after that you can remove the plastic cover from the engine, unless of course your car is equipped with it. Also try to replace spark plugs one at a time to avoid mistakes in the process. However, if you prefer to do it faster, be sure to label the high voltage cables and assign them to specific spark plugs. Before disassembling old elements, try to clean them.

When replacing spark plugs, the timing is critical. At this point, you need to be as careful as possible so as not to damage the engine. Before starting work, carefully check which key you need to use and at what point you need to unscrew the spark plugs. It is best to use a wrench. You can also use the electric version. Replacing spark plugs, although routine and seemingly simple, can still have many negative consequences. For this reason, always try to choose professional salons that guarantee the correct performance of the task assigned to them. If you do not want to change the spark plugs yourself, you will probably have to reckon with a cost in the region of 200-50 euros. Also, note that if one spark plug needs to be replaced, it's best to replace them all at once, as this may mean that they wear out soon too.

As you can see, you can save a lot by replacing spark plugs yourself. Remember, however, that you must be careful and precise not to damage anything. A visit to a specialist is a much larger expense than just buying new candles. So you have to decide if you are confident enough to handle the job yourself.
