DIY thermostat replacement

The thermostat has to be changed on rare occasions, and Granta is no exception. This usually happens for the following reasons:

• the thermocouple valve opens too late, so the engine may overheat
• opening the valve too early will prevent the motor from warming up to normal operating temperature

Roughly speaking, if in winter your valve is stuck and the antifreeze circulates constantly in a large circle, then the car will be constantly cold, respectively, the stove will not work properly either. In the summer, it is dangerous to jam the valve in a different position, that is, when the antifreeze will drive only in a small circle. In this case, the machine will have to constantly “boil”, which can lead to serious consequences.

In order to replace the thermostat on the Grant, you must have the following tool on hand:

• hexagon 5 mm
• head for 7 and 8 mm
• ratchet handle or crank

You should not buy a thermostat complete with a housing if it is not necessary. You just need to install a new thermocouple to solve the problem. To do this, the first step is to drain the coolant from the system.

We also disconnect all pipes from the thermostat terminals to get the following result:

Now, using a hexagon, unscrew the three bolts securing the thermostat to its body.

And we put it aside, as everything is ready. This is clearly demonstrated in the photo below.

Now, using a knife blade, remove the old O-ring.

In its place, we install a new ring, having previously cleaned the groove in front of it:

We take a new thermostat and make a replacement. In this case, you should not use any sealants.

We wrap three bolts of fastening of the Grants thermoelement and you can start connecting the pipes.

After that, you can pour coolant into the expansion tank. After that, we check the tightness of the cooling system in order to avoid leaks of antifreeze or antifreeze, and if such is found, we eliminate it. Before starting to operate the car, be sure to check how correctly the valve of the Grants thermostat opens, and only after that the repair can be considered complete.

The price of a new Granu thermostat is about 500 rubles for a factory part. If you take it with the case, then this is still about 500 rubles from above.
