Replacement of the thermostat VAZ 2110

Replacement of the thermostat VAZ 2110

In the engine cooling system, the car thermostat is rightfully considered one of the most important components. The VAZ 2110 model is no exception. A failed thermostat can cause the engine to overheat or, conversely, cause the engine to not reach operating temperature.

Overheating is much more dangerous (failure of the cylinder head, BC and other parts), and underheating leads to increased wear of the piston group, excessive fuel consumption, etc.

For this reason, it is very important not only to monitor the thermostat's performance, but also to carry out maintenance of the cooling system in time in accordance with the terms prescribed in the car's service book. Next, consider when to change the thermostat and how to change the VAZ 2110 thermostat.

Thermostat VAZ 2110 injector: where it is located, how it works and how it works

So, the thermostat in a car is a small plug-like element that automatically opens when the coolant (coolant) is heated to the optimum temperature (75-90 ° C) to connect the engine cooling jacket and radiator to the cooling system.

Thermostat 2110 not only helps to quickly warm up the car engine to the required temperature, increasing its wear resistance, but also limits the emission of harmful substances, protects the engine from overheating, etc.

In fact, the thermostat on a VAZ 2110 car and many other cars is a valve controlled by a temperature-sensitive element. On the "top ten" the thermostat is located inside the cover located under the hood of the car, just below the air filter housing.

The principle of operation of the thermostat, made in the form of a spring-loaded bypass valve, is the ability of the temperature sensor to change the flow rate of the coolant (antifreeze) depending on its temperature:

  • closing the gateway - sending antifreeze in a small circle, bypassing the radiator of the cooling system (the coolant circulates around the cylinders and the head of the block);
  • opening the lock - the coolant circulates in a full circle, capturing the radiator, water pump, engine cooling jacket.

The main components of the thermostat:

  • frames;
  • outlet pipe and inlet pipe of small and large circles;
  • thermosensitive element;
  • bypass and main small circle valve.

Thermostat Malfunction Symptoms and Diagnostics

The thermostat valve during operation is subjected to operational and thermal loads, that is, it can fail for many reasons. Among the main ones:

  • low-quality or used coolant (antifreeze);
  • mechanical or corrosive wear of the valve actuator, etc.

A faulty thermostat can be identified by the following symptoms:

  • The internal combustion engine of the car, without being subjected to special loads, overheats - the thermostat thermoelement has ceased to perform its functions. If everything is normal with the cooling fan, the thermostat is disassembled and the valve is checked; The internal combustion engine of the car does not warm up to the desired temperature (especially in the cold season) - the thermostat thermocouple is stuck in the open position and has ceased to perform its functions (the coolant does not heat up to the desired temperature), the cooling radiator fan does not turn on. In this case, it is also necessary to disassemble the thermostat and check the operation of the valve.
  • The internal combustion engine boils or heats up for a long time, gets stuck in an intermediate position between open and buried channels, or unstable operation of the valves. Similar to the signals described above, it is required to disassemble and check the operation of the thermostat and all its components.

To check the thermostat on the VAZ 2110, you can use various methods, since there are several methods for diagnosing a thermostat failure:

  • Start the car and warm up the engine to the desired temperature, after opening the hood. Locate the bottom hose coming from the thermostat and feel it for heat. If the thermostat is working, the pipe will heat up quickly;
  • Disassemble the thermostat, remove the thermocouple from it, which is responsible for starting the circulation of the coolant. A thermoelement immersed in water heated to a temperature of 75 degrees is maintained until the water becomes hotter (up to 90 degrees). In good conditions, when water is heated to 90 degrees, the thermocouple stem should extend.

If problems are found with the thermostat, it must be replaced. By the way, when buying a new thermostat, it should be checked by blowing the fitting (air should not come out). Also, some owners soak the new device in hot water before installing the lock, as described above. This eliminates the risk of installing a faulty device.

Replacing the VAZ 2110 thermostat with your own hands

If, after checking, the thermostat 2110 turned out to be faulty, it is disassembled and replaced with a new one. In the VAZ 2110, replacing the thermostat is not difficult, but the process requires accuracy and following the step-by-step instructions for removing and installing it.

You can replace it yourself, having previously prepared the necessary tools (key to "5", key to "8", hex key to "6", coolant, screwdrivers, rags, etc.).

To remove an element from a vehicle and install a new one:

  • having unscrewed the plug, drain the coolant from the radiator and the block, having previously turned off and cooled the car engine (unscrew the radiator valve “by hand”, block the plug with the key to “13”);
  • after removing the air filter, find the clamp on the cooling radiator hose, slightly loosening it;
  • disconnect the hose from the thermostat, disconnect the hose from the coolant pump;
  • with the key to “5”, we unscrew the three bolts securing the VAZ 2110 thermostat, remove its cover;
  • remove the thermostat and rubber o-rings from the cover.
  • put and fix the new thermostat in its place;
  • having connected the pipes, tighten the coolant drain plug on the block and the faucet on the radiator;
  • install an air filter;
  • after checking the quality of all connections, fill in the coolant to the required level;
  • expel air from the system;
  • warm up the internal combustion engine of the car until the fan turns on, check the system for leaks.

If everything is in order, recheck all connections after 500-1000 km. It happens that immediately after assembly, antifreeze or antifreeze does not flow, however, after some time, leaks appear as a result of various heating and cooling.

How to choose a thermostat: recommendations

All thermostats installed on the VAZ 2110 until 2003 were of the old design (catalog number 2110-1306010). A little later, after 2003, changes were made to the VAZ 2110 cooling system.

Consequently, the thermostat was also replaced (p/n 21082-1306010-14 and 21082-1306010-11). The new thermostats differed from the old ones in a larger response band of the thermoelement.

We also add that the thermostat from the VAZ 2111 can be installed on the VAZ 2110, since it is smaller in size, structurally compact, and the use of only one hose and two clamps reduces the likelihood of leaks.

To summarize

As you can see, the automatic replacement of the VAZ 2110 thermostat will require time and patience from the owner. It is important to achieve an acceptable quality of installation, since the further operation of the cooling system and the engine as a whole directly depends on this.

In most cases, replacing the thermostat on this car model is not difficult. The main thing is to carefully study the above instructions and choose the right thermostat for the car.
