Replacing a driver's license due to expiration

The driving license is valid for ten years. Some categories of citizens of higher education receive for a shorter period:

• persons with temporary registration on the territory of Russia for the period of their stay in the Russian Federation.

Driving with an expired driver's license is prohibited, this is equivalent to driving without a license at all, the punishment is provided for in Article 12.7 of the Code of Administrative Offenses and can range from 5 to 15 thousand rubles.

The validity period of your VU is indicated in the appropriate column. When it is nearing completion, you need to think about obtaining new rights in a timely manner, if, of course, you plan to continue using the car.

The easiest way is to change the rights at the place of your permanent or temporary registration. You can also get new rights at the place of your actual residence if you do not have a permanent residence permit.

When contacting the nearest registration point of the traffic police, you need to provide the following documents:

• an application, it can be written both in a simple form and on a form that will be given to you at the traffic police;
• a document confirming the identity and residence permit - passport;
• certificate of medical examination;
• a driver's card confirming the completion of driving training;
• old WU;
• a receipt for payment of the cost of manufacturing new rights - 800 rubles if the certificate is on a plastic basis and 400 if on paper.

If you got an external license, which was possible until 2013, then you don’t need a driver’s card, a certificate of passing exams at the traffic police will come in handy. For the rights of a new sample, you do not need to take a photo in advance, you will be photographed on the spot.

Sometimes it is also required to pass exams in theory and knowledge of traffic rules, this requirement is relevant for:

• people who had long breaks in driving experience;
• citizens who acquired rights in the territory of the CIS states after 1992.

Making a new driver's license is not a lengthy process. If all documents are in order, then you will receive new rights in an hour.

Sometimes people do not have enough time to run around and collect all the certificates, in which case the production of rights can be entrusted to special firms that will do everything quickly for the appropriate remuneration. It is not worth delaying the production of new rights. You can make them a month before the expiration of the old VU.
