Replacing the rear and front wheel bearings BMW E39

Replacing the front wheel bearings on e39

The bearing is easy to replace yourself. The task is simplified by the fact that you do not need to press anything. Wheel bearings are assembled with a hub. When buying a new spare part, check its completeness. The kit should include:

  • bearing hub;
  • new four bolts of fastening of a nave to a fist.

To carry out repairs, it is necessary to prepare the following tools: a set of ring wrenches and sockets, a set of hexagons, TORX sockets E12 and E14, a powerful wrench, a screwdriver, a soft metal hammer or a copper or brass bar mount, a rust remover such as WD-40 , metal brush.

Rear hub bearing replacement

The process of replacing the rear bearing is similar to the sequence described above, but has some differences. BMW E39 rear-wheel drive, so the CV joint is part of the hub.

Wheel Bearings for BMW 5 (e39)

Wheel bearings BMW 5 (E39) is one of the types of bearings that are an integral part of all cars.

Being the basis of the hub of a modern car, the wheel bearing perceives the axial and radial loads created during the acceleration of the car, its movement and braking. You should always remember that wheel bearings in cars are subjected to extreme loads, they are affected by temperature changes, all kinds of other environmental influences: salt on the roads, potholes resulting from potholes on the roads, various dynamic loads from brakes, transmission and steering.

Front and rear wheel bearings on the BMW 5 (E39) are consumables that must be changed periodically. Given the above, the quality of bearings must meet high requirements. It is necessary to diagnose the operation of wheel bearings at the slightest suspicion of their malfunction (noise or wheel play). It is recommended to carry out diagnostics or replacement of wheel bearings every 20 - 000 km of run.

Rear wheel bearing replacement procedure

  1. We unscrew the central nut of the CV joint (grenades).
  2. Jack up the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel.
  4. Using a screwdriver, remove the metal brake pad retainer.
  5. Unscrew the caliper and bracket. Take it aside and hang it on a metal wire hanger or tie.
  6. To reduce the eccentricity of the parking brake pads.
  7. Unscrew the brake disc with a hexagon 6 and remove it.
  8. Move the CV joint towards the gearbox. To do this, disconnect the axle shaft from the gearbox flange. Here you should use the E12 head.

If it is not possible to unscrew the axle shaft bracket from the flange, you can release the steering knuckle from the CV joint in another way. To do this, unscrew the lower arm mount and shock absorber strut and rotate the link outward. This will give you access to the hub bolts.
  9. Remove the 4 screws that hold the hub. Hit the hub with a light hammer blow.
  10. Install a new hub with bearing into the rear steering knuckle.
  11. Reassemble everything in reverse order.

The procedure for replacing the front bearing

  1. Raise the vehicle on a lift or jack.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Clean the joints from dirt and dust with a metal brush. Try WD-40 bolts and nuts to install the caliper, steering rack and pinion. Wait a few minutes for the product to work.
  4. Remove the caliper along with the bracket. Do not unscrew the brake hose and check that it is not damaged. It is better to take the removed caliper to the side immediately and hang it on a piece of wire or a plastic clamp.
  5. Loosen the brake disc. Fastened with a bolt, which is unscrewed with a hexagon 6.
  6. Remove the protective cover. You need to be careful here, as the bolts can break if you're not careful.
  7. Mark the position of the shock absorber on the steering knuckle. You can use paint for this.
  8. Remove the bolts holding the front strut, stabilizer and steering column.
  9. Hit the tip with a light hammer blow. If there is a special tip extractor, you can use it. Be careful not to damage the protective cover on the headset tip.
  10. Pull the strut out of the steering knuckle.

The ABS sensor can be removed. Doesn't interfere with wheel bearing replacement.
  11. Unscrew the 4 bolts that secure the hub to the ball joint. Hit the cube with a light kick.
  12. Install the new hub and tighten the new bolts from the repair kit.
  13. Assemble suspension elements in reverse order. When positioning the rack, align it with the marks made before disassembly.
