Replacing the rear brake pads on the Ford Mondeo

Replacing the rear brake pads on the Ford Mondeo

Hello. Today we will talk about how to replace the rear brake pads on the Ford Mondeo III with your own hands. In the article, we will describe in detail and show the replacement process so that you can do this work yourself at home. There are many similar articles on our website where we talk about replacing the front and rear pads. You can read more about these articles here and here, as well as here and here. I will not go into details and write about the reasons that contribute to the wear of the pads, as well as the signs that indicate the need to replace the pads, you can read about this in previous articles.

To work you will need:

  1. Have a set of brake pads;
  2. Minimum set of keys + "Torx" stars;
  3. A device for pressing the brake piston, or in the absence of such a special device for pressing, + a key to "17" with a handle for turning;
  4. Syringe for pumping out brake fluid, rags, metal brush;
  5. Jack.

Replacing brake pads on a Ford Mondeo - step by step instructions

  1. We put the car on a flat surface, install the jack and start the nuts while the car is on four points.
  2. Then lift the side we are working on and remove the wheel completely.
  3. We clean the workplace with a metal brush and rags. Be very careful not to damage the rubber surface of the pads and brake cylinder guides!
  4. Open the brake fluid reservoir and draw a few cubes of brake fluid with a syringe. This is necessary so that when installing new pads, fluid does not leak out when we press the piston.

  5. Loosen the caliper mounting bolts. In some Fords, they can be turnkey torx, in some they can be a regular head. As a rule, the bolts are closed with plastic plugs.
  6.  When the clamp is removed, we hang it on the wire or gently move it to the side so that it does not interfere in the future. Inspect the rubber hoses and dust covers, some may need to be replaced.
  7. We clean all the seats with improvised means, it can be a metal brush or rags, it all depends on how dirty they are.
  8. Now you can start the assembly process, that is, to replace the brake pads. To do this, it is necessary to muffle the piston, however, the configuration of the piston is such that simply muffling it with a nozzle will not work. The fact is that the piston has grooves for a special extractor, which rotates the piston and at the same time presses on it, pushing the piston inward. If you, like me, do not have such a device, you will have to do something yourself. I solved this problem with the key on "17" and the handle. Instead of a wrench, you can use a special key from the grinder, which tightens the nut on the circle of the grinder. In general, I think the meaning is clear. I notice that on the right side the piston rotates counterclockwise, and on the left side it rotates clockwise. Be careful not to bite the rag.

When the piston is recessed, we put new brake pads in place and proceed to assembly, it is done in the reverse order. Remember to lubricate the caliper mounting bolts with graphite grease or, in extreme cases, processing.

Once you've replaced the rear brake pads on both sides, install the wheels and lower the car off the jacks and depress the brake pedal to bring the brake cylinders back into place.

Note: The first 50 km your brakes will be, to put it mildly, not very good, so do not be afraid that when you apply the brake, the car will stop weakly. I also strongly do not recommend the first few days, while the pads are rolling, to brake hard, this will negatively affect the pads and significantly shorten their life.
