Replacing the rear brake pads VAZ 2114

The required frequency of replacing the rear brake pads VAZ 2114
This issue is not strictly regulated by the vehicle operating instructions. For example, the pads need to be changed every 15 thousand kilometers rolled. By and large, it all depends on the quality of the pads and the driving style of the driver. It is worth noting that high-quality components of a car must serve at least 10 km, and the wear of the rear pads is always less, and before they are replaced they have time to move up to 000 km. Thus, the replacement time must be determined independently during an inspection or in a car service.

Checking the brake pads for wear

So, you need to install new VAZ 2114 rear brake pads if: their thickness has become less than 1.5 mm; they have oil, scratches or chips; the base is not well connected to the overlays; when braking, a creak is heard; the disc is deformed; the size of the working body of the drum has become more than 201.5 mm. To carry out this check, you must remove each of the wheels. All necessary measurements are performed with a vernier caliper.

Preparing to dismantle the pads

To change the rear pads, an overpass or inspection pit is needed, since you need access to the handbrake. Often, car owners carry out replacement where necessary: lifting the body on removed wheels or a curb. It should be noted that such methods contradict safety precautions when servicing a car. In order to replace the old and the subsequent installation of new pads, you will need the following tools:

  • balloon wrench,
  • a set of separate keys,
  • a hammer,
  • small wooden beams,
  • screwdriver,
  • pliers,
  • VD-40,
  • jack.

Removing the rear pads

The actual process of replacing the pads is carried out in this order. The car is driven onto the overpass and the first gear is engaged. To fix its position, "shoes" are additionally placed under the front wheels. Next, you need to remove the muffler from the rubber cushions in the area of the handbrake tensioner. After we loosen the handbrake by unscrewing the tensioner cable nut with a commensurate wrench. So that later there are no problems with installing the brake drum, the nut must be unscrewed to the maximum. Next, we loosen the wheel mount with a balloon wrench, raise the car with a jack and completely remove the wheel.

In order to remove the drum, it is necessary to unscrew the guide bolts with clamps, turn the drum a quarter of a turn in either direction and evenly tighten the bolts back. Thus, the drum will pull out on its own, since in the new position there are no holes for the bolts, but only a cast surface. A hammer and wooden block will be needed if the drum is jammed. In a circle, we substitute the bar on the surface of the drum and tap it with a hammer. You need to knock until the drum starts scrolling. In this case, it is better not to knock on the drum itself, otherwise it may split.

Replacing the rear brake pads VAZ 2114

There are a cylinder, springs and two pads under the drum. The guide springs are detached from the pads using pliers, a homemade hook, or a flat screwdriver. Next, the clamping spring and the pads themselves are removed. After that, it is necessary to compress the side slots of the brake cylinder. On one of the pads there is a hand brake lever, which must be rearranged to new pads.

Installing the brake pads

The sequence of operations for installing the brake pads is in reverse order. New pads must strictly fall into the grooves of the cylinder, and the handbrake lever - into a special connector. Next, you need to hook the guide springs, the handbrake cable and squeeze the pads together in order to drown the brake cylinder. Next comes the turn of the brake drum. If it does not install, it is possible that the handbrake is not completely loosened or the brake cylinder is not clamped. After installing the wheels, you need to “pump” the brakes several times so that the pads fall into place, and also check the wheels for free play and handbrake action.
