Is starting the engine a serious problem? How to prevent diesel overclocking?

How does a diesel engine work and how is it arranged?

To understand how serious the problem of diesel acceleration is, it is worth knowing in advance about its structure and principle of operation. The diesel drive was developed in the first half of the 260th century, the first car to adopt it was the Mercedes-Benz XNUMX D. At present, such engine solutions consist of a number of elements, including a flywheel and a dual-mass flywheel, camshafts. and crankshafts, nozzles, as well as a connecting rod or air filter and a reverse gear.

Modern diesel engines

Modern diesel engines are controlled by additional electronic systems. This allows you to accurately supply a certain dose of fuel to the engine compartment. At the same time, it allows you to make a number of modifications that improve the performance of the car, but can also contribute to a reduction in the life of the power unit. They are also usually equipped with solutions that help reduce emissions of volatile compounds into the atmosphere. As a result, they can meet stringent environmental and environmental standards.

The standard operation of diesel engines is associated with somewhat different phenomena than in the case of gasoline units. The design does not require the use of spark plugs to start the ignition of the air-fuel mixture. The air in the cylinder is compressed and then heated to a temperature of up to 900oC. As a result, the mixture ignites and hence diesel fuel is injected into the combustion chamber.

What is diesel acceleration?

Loud and unpleasant sounds coming from under the engine, as well as thick smoke from under the hood and exhaust pipe, are the main symptoms of diesel acceleration. In this case, the drive reaches very high revolutions and cannot be stopped until it is completely damaged. When starting a diesel engine, the driver cannot control the course of the event and must immediately leave the vehicle and then retire to a safe place. Spontaneous combustion at close range can result in serious bodily injury.

What causes a diesel engine to stall?

This phenomenon usually occurs as a result of engine oil getting into the combustion chamber. One of the most common causes of diesel engine overclocking is excessive wear on the turbocharger. Then the oil seals do not perform their function and pass lubricant into the intake manifold. When mixed with fuel, diesel starts to work. The consequences are usually serious, and a major overhaul, and often a replacement of the drive unit, is necessary. Often this is not profitable, and then the only solution is to scrap the car.

What to do when you notice that the diesel engine is overloaded?

The course of an event can last from a few seconds to several minutes. The only solution is to immediately stop the car, then shift into a higher gear and quickly release the clutch. Of course, there is no guarantee that this will prevent diesel runaway. At the same time, we can damage other components, including the dual mass flywheel.

For automatic transmission vehicles, the only remedy you can try is to simply remove the key from the ignition.

What are the consequences of starting a diesel engine?

You must remember that the consequences of starting a diesel engine are very complex, and the result can be irreversible damage. These include, among others:

  • jamming of the power unit, the cause of which is the lack of engine oil;
  • explosion of the entire system. The destruction of the bushings contributes to the explosion, as a result of which the connecting rod is knocked out of the cylinder block.

Non-managed diesel engine and diesel particulate filter (DPF).

The VOC filter elements cause an increase in the amount of oil in the sump, causing it to mix with the fuel. As a result of this mechanism, the fuel-lubricant mixture can be sucked into the drive unit. The consequence of all the phenomena discussed in today's entry can be irreversible damage to the diesel engine.

Is it possible to prevent engine overclocking?

Many motorists are wondering if it is possible to prevent diesel acceleration in any way. Unfortunately, sometimes even properly operated cars can fail like this. To reduce the chance of starting your engine, change your engine oil regularly (according to the manufacturer's recommendations or more often) and have your vehicle serviced regularly by a trusted mechanic. Rapid fault detection will reduce the risk of failure.

Whether you own a gasoline or diesel vehicle, you must know what diesel engine acceleration is. Unfortunately, this is common and the problem often occurs in older used vehicles. Among such units are Renault 1.9 dCi, Fiat 1.3 Multijet and Mazda 2.0 MZR-CD designs. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to buy a used car.
