ZEV - what does it mean? [ANSWER]

ZEV - what is it? What is ZEV and how is it different from BEV battery vehicles? Can ZEV be hydrogen? We answer.

ZEV is a zero emission vehicle, i.e. a vehicle that emits no emissions while driving. Zero emission vehicles are battery-powered vehicles (like the Tesla or Nissan Leaf) but also hydrogen-powered (like the Hyundai FCEV or Toyota Mirai, pictured) that produce only water when generating power.

ZEV vehicles also include bicycles, motorcycles (including electric ones), and even golf carts. Thus the category ZEV includes BEV (see BEV - what does it mean?). In turn, these are not zero-emission vehicles. plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and classic hybrids (HEV).
