Are winter tires overpriced? Many drivers say yes.

Are winter tires overpriced? Many drivers say yes. They don't improve safety, they're expensive and unnecessary - that's what drivers who don't drive say about winter tires. How much truth is in these statements?

Are winter tires overpriced? Many drivers say yes.

Here are the most common excuses for not switching to winter tires.

Because there are queues in the workshops

Postponing tire change dates could take revenge. Booking an appointment with a tire repair shop over the phone can take quite a long time. Finding a convenient date for us means having to call a dozen or so local workshops. We spend our nerves and time on this. In extreme cases, drivers get rid of these sensations and refuse to replace.

– In order to simplify the process of applying for a seasonal tire change, we have created a website that automatically searches for car services where tire change will be possible at a convenient time for the driver. Currently, our network includes more than three hundred car services throughout Poland, says Andrzej Skowron, President of Polskie Składy Oponiarskie, owner of the Exchangeopon.pl website, where you can book tire changes online.

Because there is little snow in Poland

This is a popular argument that means nothing in practice.

“Summer tires stop working effectively when the average daily temperature drops below 7 degrees C. Whether the road is dry or wet, the sun is shining or it is raining, winter tires simply provide more safety at lower temperatures,” ExchangePon convinces. expert.pl.

In the test of the British magazine "Autoexpress" during emergency braking from a speed of 80 km / h on a wet surface, a car traveling on winter tires stopped after 35 m. After replacing the tires with summer tires, the braking distance increased to 42 m. 30 km/h at the point where the car was already on winter tires.

'Cause I only drive in the city

Apart from the cold weather, not all city streets are regularly cleared of snow. Local roads and adjacent car parks can be "white" even for a few weeks.

Winter tires provide better traction in winter conditions. On city streets, a certain amount of control over the car can protect our car from minor damage, and pedestrians from more serious damage. It is true that many drivers drive summer tires all winter without much adventure. But this is not because the public utilities have taken good care of their safety. They were also very lucky, because they did not face any extreme situations.

'Cause I can't afford two sets

Summer tires are made from a very different compound and wear out faster outside of their nominal season. This is one of the few moments where regular cars look like Formula 1 cars.

– Unfavorable external conditions will destroy the tread and shorten the life of the tire. In addition, a year-round tire will have significantly higher mileage. As a result, it will have to be replaced with a new one sooner. From a cost point of view, using only one set of tires is a bad decision, says Andrzej Skowron.

You can buy all-season tires, but from a safety point of view, this is also not the best solution. In tests conducted by American Tire Rack, all-season tires performed slightly better than summer tires in both braking and cornering on snow.

Tire search

Because my car is full of electronics

Four-wheel drive, ESP stabilization system, ABS, etc. The electronics are very useful - they optimize the suspension, steering and braking. However, these systems will not work in a situation of very low mechanical adhesion. Moreover, they can behave unpredictably. When driving on snow on summer tires with the electronics turned on, we may have problems with elementary maneuvers and driving.

Electronics will bring the car out of a skid, shorten the braking distance and make driving easier, but only if the tires are working properly.
