Traffic priority signs - what function do they perform?
Content
Priority traffic signs are designed to ensure that motorists pass narrowed sections of highways, dangerous areas of highways and intersections as safely as possible.
Main Road (MA) - Priority Key Indicators
The latest edition of the SDA provides for the presence of 13 such road signs. Two of the most important of them - 2.1 and 2.2 determine the beginning and end of the main road. At most intersections of transport arteries of cities there is a sign 2.1. It gives traffic priority to any motorist driving along the main highway to the intersection.
In built-up areas, priority signs are placed before each road intersection.
Traffic rules make it possible to install such signs outside the settlements, because outside the city traffic safety is no less important. Outside the city, the described priority indicator is set:
- at the beginning of the entrance to the State Duma;
- on the sections of the turn of the main engine (change of direction);
- in front of heavy traffic intersections;
- at the end of the DG.
SDA requires that sign 2.1 be placed 150–300 meters before complex intersections. This allows road users to prepare in advance for the turn. When the main engine changes direction at any of the intersections, the table "Direction of the main engine" (8.13) is mounted under the sign. It shows where the main road turns after crossing highways.
The fact that the State Duma has ended is signaled by the pointer 2.2 SDA. Under it, a warning is sometimes placed - “Give way” (2.4), if the end of the main route falls on a place in front of the intersection, where other drivers have the right of priority movement.
Priority signs in the form of red triangles
These traffic rules include seven road signs:
- "Intersection with a minor highway";
- “Adjunction on the right to a minor highway” - three signs;
- "Adjacent to the left" - also three pointers.
These are traffic priority signs, although they are warning in form. They prioritize junctions and point out to drivers the features of difficult places where multiple roads converge (junction pattern) as well as draw drivers' attention to potentially unsafe sections of traffic.
In cities, such road signs are placed 80–100 m from difficult intersections, outside the city - 150–300 m. They are very important for drivers, as they warn of places where they may be in danger of getting into an accident.

Other traffic priority indicators
There are four more indicators in the SDA that belong to this group:
- 2.4 - requires the passage of another transport;
- 2.5 - excludes the possibility of non-stop movement in front of a problematic place on the road;
- 2.6 - determines the priority of oncoming traffic;
- 2.7 - speaks of an advantage over driving in the oncoming lane.
Signpost 2.4 tells the person driving to give way to cars that are driving on the intersecting road. If under it there is a table 8.13, cars traveling along the State Duma have the advantage of passage.
Outside cities, sign 2.4 is placed 150–300 m before the intersection of highways (at the same time, it is supplied with an additional plate indicating the exact distance to the dangerous place), then before a difficult junction on the road.
When the visibility of cars traveling to the intersection along the crossed highway is low, instead of the “Give way” sign, “Movement is prohibited without stopping” (2.5). This sign according to traffic rules forces the driver to stop before crossing the roads and at the same time reminds him that he is moving along a secondary highway. Further movement is allowed only after the motorist fully assesses the situation on the road. Pointer 2.5 is also mounted in front of railway crossings. Road users must stop right in front of it.
Signs 2.6 and 2.7 are placed in front of narrow sections of the tracks. The first of them is prohibitive in form and priority in purpose. It is important to understand - it requires that you give way to another car on a problematic section of traffic. That is, if you are sure that you will not create an emergency, it is not necessary to stop at such a pointer.
Traffic rules describe two types of sign 2.6:
- on a yellow background - a temporary indicator; warns of road works that cause a narrowing of the carriageway;
- on a white background - a constant pointer.
The sign at number 2.7 belongs to the priority category, being informational in its form. This sign gives an advantage to vehicles in the matter of passing a dangerous road zone (for example, a bridge).
Be sure to remember the priority signs. They will help you avoid many dangerous situations on the roads.
