Motorcycle sprockets and chain - when should they be replaced?

Motorcycle Sprockets and Drive Chain - Basic Maintenance

The drive train of a motorcycle is constantly exposed to a number of external factors - even in winter, when you do not use a motorcycle, the dirt accumulated on it causes the formation of pockets of corrosion. Driving is even worse: rain, sand and everything else on the road settles on the drive, accelerating its wear. So remember to keep your motorcycle sprockets and chain relatively clean. A basic cleaning of the drive chain should be carried out approximately every 500 km (when driving in dry weather on paved roads) or 300 km (when driving on sandy terrain or when it rains). Detailed cleaning of the sprockets and chain, including unscrewing covers (such as the drive chain cover or the cover under which the front sprocket is located), should be carried out at least several times during the season, while controlling the drive chain tension. .

You should clean your motorcycle sprockets and chain with a special motorcycle drive cleaner and a special brush. Forget about gasoline and other solvents - they will damage the seals and you will have to replace the sprocket and chain. It is better to use a kit that costs several times less than a new set of disks and will save yourself work and a lot of money.

Replacing the sprocket and drive chain - when is it necessary?

Even if you maintain your motorcycle transmission flawlessly, sooner or later it will be time to replace it. Motorcycle sprockets wear out just like the rest of your bike's components, so you can't avoid replacing them - you can only extend their life by following the tips above. Replacing the sprocket and chain is inevitable when:

  • Motorcycle chain too loose - Unable to achieve drive chain slack at the maximum tension specified by the manufacturer? This is a sign that it's time to replace the drive with a new one. Remember that the whole set should be changed, and not just the chain - if you put a new product on the old sprockets, it wears out very quickly.
  • Motorcycle sprockets have sharp teeth. - If you see that the front sprocket or drive sprocket has sharp or uneven teeth, this is a clear sign that you have neglected your drive and you need to replace the sprocket and chain.
  • Motorcycle sprockets have pockets of corrosion. - if there is rust or other mechanical damage on the sprockets or chain, replace the drive with a new one as soon as possible.
