1JZ - GTE and GE engine from Toyota. Specifications and tuning

Tuning fans will surely associate the 1JZ model. The engine is great for any modifications. Flexibility goes hand in hand with excellent performance, making it a popular choice. Find out more about the technical data of the GTE and GE versions, features and tuning options in our article!

Basic information about the power unit of the gas turbine engine

This is a 2,5-liter gasoline unit with a total volume of 2 cc.³ turbocharged. His work is carried out on a four-stroke cycle. It was produced at the Toyota Motor Corporation plant in Tahara, Japan from 1990 to 2007.

Constructive decisions

The unit uses a cast iron block and an aluminum cylinder head. The designers also settled on two belt-driven DOHC camshafts and four valves per cylinder (24 in total).

The design also includes the VVT-i electronic fuel injection system. The variable valve timing system with intelligence has been introduced since 1996. What else was used in this engine? The 1JZ also has a variable length ACIS intake manifold.

First generation

In the first version of the GTE model, the engine had a compression ratio of 8,5:1. It is equipped with two parallel CT12A turbochargers. They blew air through an intercooler that was mounted on the side and front (produced from 1990 to 1995). The generated power reached 276,2 hp. at 6 rpm of maximum power and 200 Nm at 363 rpm. peak torque.

The second generation of the power unit

The second generation of the engine featured a higher compression ratio. The parameter has been raised to the level of 9,0:1. ETCS and ETCSi have been applied to the Toyota Chaser JZX110 and Crown JZS171.

As for the second batch of 1jz, the engine had a redesigned head, modified water jackets for better cylinder cooling, and brand new titanium nitride coated gaskets. A single CT15B turbocharger was also used. The variant produced 276,2 hp. at 6200 rpm. and maximum torque of 378 Nm.

GE engine specifications

The GE variant has the same power as the GTE. The engine also received spark ignition in a four-stroke cycle. It was produced by Toyota Motor Corporation at the Tahar plant from 1990 to 2007.

The design is based on a cast iron block and an aluminum cylinder head with two camshafts, which are driven by a V-belt. The model was equipped with an electronic fuel injection system, as well as a VVT-i system from 1996 and a variable length ACIS intake manifold. Bore 86 mm, stroke 71,5 mm.

First and second generation

What parameters did the first generation 1jz have? The engine developed a power of 168 hp. at 6000 rpm. and 235 Nm. The compression ratio was 10,5:1. Models of the first series were also equipped with a mechanical distributor ignition system, this applies to the version installed from 1990 to 1995.

The second GE variant had a 10,5:1 compression ratio, VVT-i technology on the intake camshaft, and a DIS-E ignition system with 3 ignition coils. It produced 197 hp. at 6000 rpm, and the maximum engine torque was 251 Nm.

Which cars were equipped with 1JZ-GTE and GE engines?

The GTE model had the best level of maximum power and torque. On the other hand, GE fared better in day-to-day use, such as commuting. In addition to differences related to the parameters of the units, they also have a common feature - a stable design. The Toyota engine was installed on the following models (version name on the left):

  • GE – Toyota Soarer, Chaser, Cresta, Progres, Crown, Crown Estate, Mark II Blit and Verossa;
  • GTE — Toyota Supra MK III, Chaser/Cresta/Mark II 2.5 GT Twin Turbo, Chaser Tourer V, Cresta Tourer V, Mark II Tourer V, Verossa, Mark II iR-V, Soarer, Crown and Mark II Blit.

Tuning with 1JZ - the engine is ideal for modifications

One of the most frequently chosen solutions is account replenishment. To do this, you will need details such as:

  • fuel pump;
  • drainage pipes;
  • exhaust system performance;
  • wind filter.

Thanks to them, the boost pressure in the computer can be increased from 0,7 bar to 0,9 bar.

With an additional Blitz ECU, boost controller, blower and intercooler, the pressure will increase to 1,2 bar. With this configuration, which generates the maximum boost pressure for standard turbochargers, the 1JZ engine will be able to develop power up to 400 hp.

Even more power with a turbo kit

If someone wants to further increase the capabilities of the power unit, then the best solution would be to put a turbo kit. The good news is that it's not hard to find special kits tailored to the 1JZ-GTE variety in stores or the aftermarket.

They most often:

  • turbo engine Garrett GTX3076R;
  • thickened three-row cooler;
  • oil radiator;
  • air filter;
  • Throttle valve 80 mm.

You will also need a fuel pump, armored fuel lines, injectors, camshafts and a performance exhaust system. Together with the APEXI PowerFC ECU and AEM engine management systems, the power unit will be able to generate from 550 to 600 hp.

You see what an interesting unit 1JZ. Mod lovers will love this engine, so if you are one of them, look for it on the market.
