1.8t AWT engine in Volkswagen Passat B5 – the most important information

The 1.8t AWT engine is mainly known from the Passat. The stable operation of the unit in this car is associated with the absence of failures and long-term trouble-free operation. This was influenced by the design of the drive unit, as well as the car itself. What is worth knowing about the design of a motorcycle and a car? You will find the main news in this article!

Volkswagen 1.8t AWT engine - on which cars was it installed

Despite the fact that the unit is most associated with the Passat B5 model, it was also used in other cars. The four-cylinder engine has been installed in cars since 1993 - these were models such as the Polo Gti, Golf MkIV, Bora, Jetta, New Beetle S, as well as the Audi A3, A4, A6 and TT Quattro Sport.

It is worth noting that the Volkswagen group also includes Skoda and SEAT. These manufacturers also installed the device in their vehicles. In the case of the former, it was the limited model Octavia vRS, and in the latter, the Leon Mk1, Cupra R and Toledo.

Drive design

The design of the motor was based on a cast iron block. This is joined by an aluminum cylinder head and twin camshafts with five valves per cylinder. The real working volume was somewhat less - it reached exactly 1 cm781. The engine had a cylinder bore of 3 mm and a piston stroke of 81 mm.

An important design decision was the use of a forged steel crankshaft. The design also included split forged connecting rods and Mahle forged pistons. The last of the calls concerned the selected motor models.

Good turbocharger design

The turbocharger works very similar to the Garret T30. The component is fed into a variable length intake manifold.

The way it works is that at low RPMs, air flows through thin intake ducts. Thus, it was possible to obtain more torque and improve the driving culture - the unit ensures uniform operation even at low revs.

On the other hand, at high speeds, the damper opens. It connects the large open space of the intake manifold to the cylinder head, bypassing the pipes, and also increases maximum power.

Various 1.8t AWT engine options

There are several types of actuators on the market. Most variants of the VW Polo, Golf, Beetle and Passat offered engines ranging from 150 to 236 hp. The most powerful engines were installed on the Audi TT Quattro Sports. The distribution of the engine lasted from 1993 to 2005, and the engine itself belonged to the EA113 family.

Racing versions were also available. The power and durability of the powertrain has been used in the Audi Formula Palmer series. The engine had a Garrett T34 turbocharger with the possibility of a smooth boost, which made it possible to increase the power of the 1.8 t engine to 360 hp. The models used in F2 were also built with 425 hp. with the possibility of supercharging up to 55 hp

The Passat B5 and the 1.8 20v AWT engine are a good combination.

Let's find out a little more about the car that has become synonymous with stable performance, the 5t AWT Passat B1.8. The car was produced from 2000 to 2005, but it can often be seen on the roads today - precisely because of the successful combination of a solid design and a stable power unit.

When using this unit, the average fuel consumption was about 8,2 l / 100 km. The car accelerated to 100 km / h in 9,2 seconds, and its maximum speed was 221 km / h with a curb weight of 1320 kg. Passat B5.5 1.8 20v Turbo was equipped with a four-cylinder AWT gasoline engine with 150 hp. at 5700 rpm and a torque of 250 Nm.

In the case of this car model, power was sent through FWD front-wheel drive with a 5-speed manual transmission. The car behaves very well on the road. This was influenced by the use of McPherson independent suspension, coil springs, a shock beam at the front, as well as a multi-link suspension. The car was also equipped with ventilated brake discs at the rear and front.

Was the 1.8t AWT engine faulty?

The drive received good reviews. However, there were some problems during use. Most often they were associated with the deposition of oil sludge, the failure of the ignition coil or the failure of the water pump. Some users have also complained about a leaky vacuum system, damaged timing belt and tensioner. The coolant sensor was also faulty.

These defects appeared in the course of daily operation of the car. However, this was no reason to consider the 1.8t AWT engine bad. The successful engine design, combined with the thoughtful design of cars like the Passat B5 or Golf Mk4, means these cars are still in use today.
