28.09.2011/XNUMX/XNUMX | All Cuban citizens can buy and sell cars

It's hard to believe, but it wasn't until September 28, 2011 that the Cuban government passed a law allowing all citizens to buy and sell cars. The new law came into force on the first day of October and was another element of the thaw in the country, led by Fidel and Raul Castro.

Until now, the average Cuban could only buy a car made before the revolution (1959), although, of course, the government later imported cars, especially from the USSR and other countries of the Eastern Bloc. The Polish Fiat 126r or Fiat 125r were also brought to Cuba.

Restrictions on the purchase of new cars caused a situation in which the Cubans tried at all costs to repair the cars left on the island after the Americans left it. From here in Havana you can meet American road cruisers with Lada or Volga power plants.

The ability to buy a car is one of the elements of the thaw, but earning money is a serious problem. The average Cuban earns about $20 a month, so the introduction of the new law is a purely theoretical change for him.

By 2014, only 50 Cubans had bought a new car. The state has a monopoly on the sale, which imposes huge markups. In Cuba, a Peugeot 508 sedan in 2014 cost the equivalent of PLN 262. dollars, or more than PLN 960 thousand.
