Test drive 48-volt Bosch systems: you win when you stop

Reduced fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15%

The 48-volt systems developed by Bosch should eliminate one drawback of the classic internal combustion engine - the loss of energy during braking.

While everyone is talking about electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids today, the classic combustion engine still has great potential for fuel economy. How Bosch designers can demonstrate this with their flexible 48-volt system that generates electricity while driving, or rather, accumulating energy from a stop of the car. When the driver of a gasoline or diesel vehicle brakes, the driving energy is usually converted into heat by friction from the brake disc and then dissipated into the surrounding area.

However, Bosch's 48-volt system is capable of recovering up to 20 kilowatts when braking and storing energy in a lithium-ion battery. When accelerating, this energy can be used by the electric motor to unload the vehicle's internal combustion engine. This reduces fuel consumption, improves road dynamics, as well as movement when starting and stopping, and also allows you to control only low speed current, for example, when parking.

Bosch values the potential of 48-volt COXNUMX reduction systems.2 emissions of 15 percent – an impressive number given the CO emission reduction targets set2... In addition, the new vehicle electrical system allows additional functions such as electrical swing stabilization. The figures show a possible installation option: an electric motor, connected by a belt to the combustion engine, acts not only as a starter, but also as a generator and accelerator. A second electric motor on the rear axle can even help front-wheel drive models get started with all-wheel drive. Bosch estimates that by 2025, about 20 percent of all new vehicles will be equipped with a 48-volt system.
