How to prepare a child for first grade? School is a new adventure for a child

Just like kindergarten talk about school in terms of a big, big adventure. Everyone knows that an interesting adventure can be scary, difficult, sometimes full of emotions, but most importantly, it is NEW, exciting, allows you to make friends, knowledge and develop. And that's exactly what the school is like! The child must know that he can meet both villains and obstacles. Let's face it, it will always be sweet. But above all, let's show joy and excitement, and I guarantee that our freshman will appreciate our honesty and succumb to enthusiasm.

We encourage you to study, we do not scare you

Watch what you say and, more importantly, what others say about the school. All messages like: “well, it will start now”, “the end of the game, now there will be only study”, “maybe you will / will only have five”, “our Kshis / Zuzya will definitely be an exemplary student”, “now you have to be a polite child” , “if he/she sits on the bench for so long”, etc.

Don't talk badly about the school, teachers, other children, conditions, for example, the school is ugly and the field is sad. It may sound controversial, but neither you, the parent, grandparents, or friends of the family, have the right to transfer your prejudices onto the child. This is where our little one begins a new learning phase that lasts several years, and instead of imprinting our observations and emotions on him, we should let him discover his own.

The most interesting school stories

Tell beautiful stories. You don't have good impressions from school? Travel, favorite teacher, first love, collusion with a friend, opening a big comic book shelf in the library, a fun place to play behind the school? I do not believe. Pleasant things must have happened over the years. Remember everything you can. Start with how you got ready for school yourself, what your first notebooks were, who made book covers with you, how you became a student, whether you ate sandwiches politely, what the dressing room looked like, etc. Once you start, memory will chase memory. AS WELL AS Children love to listen to their parents' life stories. It's better than fairy tales. And since the baby has nothing to relate to with his anxieties of the first year of life, he will gladly turn to your experience for support. Remember that the more you talk about a difficult topic, the faster you will get through it!

Preparing a school cot together

Involve your child in the preparation of the school leaflet. The bragging field is huge and should be used wisely. We must choose school bag, pencil case, accessories, change of shoes, lunch box, drinker, etc. This means not only mandatory purchases, but, above all, discussing the action plan and letting your child decide how he wants to organize himself with all this school madness. What pattern does he want on his schoolbag, does he plan to take fruit yogurt, his favorite sandwich or homemade cookies to school? What drink? Warm tea or juice (preferably diluted with water). Our freshman will feel that he has more freedom than in kindergarten and - believe me - he will love it. By the way, a hint: if your child still needs support in the form of a soft toy, you can buy a talisman keychain. Even quite large - fastened to a briefcase or to the key to the locker or to the keys to the house.

Getting to know the school before entering first grade

Organize a reconnaissance mission. Or better yet, several. Apart from the open day, the school does not hold an adaptation week, but this does not mean that you cannot visit it on your own. It is best to call and find out when it will be open (on holidays also repairs, cleaning, meetings, consultations) and ... come. Walk along the corridors, check where the toilet, wardrobe and common room are. Drop by the classroom while the cleaners are cleaning up. Work your way from the entrance to the wardrobe, then to the hall and toilet. Try to find a staff room, director's office, library. Wander around the area, maybe there is a playground there? It is also helpful to take a few walks from home to school and back. Of course, if it is a trip by bike or public transport, then we also “train” it.

First Grade Books

Read books about going to school. Together, even if the child is already reading alone. And it's not enough that you read one or two books. Nothing helps to cope with a difficult topic like talking about it often. Then even a stressful event gradually becomes mundane, it seems less and less terrifying. Especially when we learn (from books) the stories of other children who have faced the same problem. There are so many games for schoolchildren on the market that I could write a separate review about them. But I'll give you at least a few: “Franklin goes to school” “What happened to Albert?” It is also worth turning to books that strengthen the child and help him increase self-esteem in difficult moments - such a recommendation can be found in our text "TOP 10 books that strengthen the child emotionally."

Before entering the first grade - learning to win and lose

Empower your emotional child. No, you do not need to immediately run to a psychologist or therapist. You can do it yourself, at home, without much effort, during everyday ... games.. Enough to reach the board games. During each game, the child will come into contact with exactly the same emotions as at school. There will be tension, struggle with time, new challenges, sometimes no influence on fate, competition or cooperation (we choose cooperative games to learn cooperation). And most of all there will be victories and defeats, it is here that the most tears and despondency appear. So you have to hold back and let your child fail. That next to loving people, he will learn to cope with failures.
