Fiat's new city car was introduced on 9 December 1991 in Rome and a day later in Warsaw. Production started in June in Tychy, so a large number of vehicles were prepared for the market launch.

Although it was modern in terms of design, it used well-known technologies. Old engines were used as a powerplant: the 700, known from BIS, was the main engine on the Polish market. Much more modern units were used everywhere: the 903 cm3 known from Panda, and since 1994 also the first generation Punta 1.1 engine, which was installed on the Sporting version.

There was a huge difference in performance between the Cinquecento 700 and 900. The first accelerated to 100 km / h in less than 30 seconds, and the more powerful version needed about 18 seconds. The Sporting stood out in the offer, with 13,8 seconds to 100 km/h, which was really fast in the mid-nineties.
