ADAC Winter tire test 2011: 175/65 R14 and 195/65 R15

ADAC Winter tire test 2011: 175/65 R14 and 195/65 R15Every year the German auto-moto club ADAC publishes winter tire tests according to the established method. We present to you the test results in the following sizes: 175/65 R14 and 195/65 R15.

Tire testing is divided into seven categories. Driving performance on dry, wet, snow and ice, as well as tire noise, rolling resistance (impact on fuel consumption) and wear rate. The test methodology itself, in brief, consists of assessing the vehicle's behavior on a dry surface in a straight line and when cornering at normal speed, directional guidance and the response of the tires to the steering wheel. This category also includes the behavior of the tires in sudden changes of direction and in slalom. The wet behavior test evaluates braking between 80 and 20 km / h on wet asphalt and concrete. In addition, the handling and speed at which aquaplaning is performed in the forward direction or when cornering is assessed. Braking from 30 to 5 km / h, vehicle traction, heading guidance and similar ratings are tested in snow on snow. Tire noise assessment consists of measuring the noise inside the vehicle when braking at a speed of 80 to 20 km / h (after deducting the effect of engine noise) and outside when the vehicle is driven with the engine off. Fuel consumption is measured at a constant speed of 80, 100 and 120 km / h. Tire wear is estimated by continuously measuring tread loss over 12 km.

The individual categories contribute to the overall evaluation as follows: dry performance 15% (driving stability 45%, handling 45%, braking 10%), wet performance 30% (braking 30%, aquaplaning 20%, aquaplaning in cornering 10% , handling 30%, circling 10%), snow performance 20% (ABS braking 35%, starting off 20%, traction/sidetracking 45%), ice performance 10% (ABS braking 60% , side rail 40%), tire noise 5% (outside noise 50%, inside noise 50%), fuel consumption 10% and wear 10%. The final score ranges from 0,5 to 5,5 for each category, and the overall score is the average of all categories.
