The degree of wear of shock absorbers directly affects not only comfort, but also driving safety.
The task of the shock absorber is to counteract the vertical vibrations of the wheels and tear them off the ground. When the shock absorbers are worn, the stopping distance of the car increases by 50 meters at a speed of 2 km / h.
Damping deteriorates slowly and the driver gets used to it. This makes it difficult to objectively assess the condition of the shock absorbers. Optical control allows 
only if they are full of holes. When the shock absorbers are worn, the vehicle behaves unsteadily when driving over bumps, and when cornering, the car may jump to the side. Other symptoms of shock absorber wear are uneven tire tread wear and excessive "diving" into the front of the vehicle when braking.

In the first 3 years of car operation, i.e. before the first technical inspection, shock absorbers must still be in working order. During periodic technical inspections of the vehicle, the user must check the degree of wear of the shock absorbers at a diagnostic station equipped with an appropriate device. In principle, modern shock absorbers should serve at least 5 years of operation.

Each manufacturer of shock absorbers specifies which brand and model they are designed for. Shock brands have a greater or lesser reputation, and there is no reason to buy products from unknown manufacturers. When buying replacement shock absorbers, you need to specify the make and model of the car, year of manufacture and engine size, and self-respecting sellers simply ask for the VIN number. In principle, shock absorbers should be changed on all wheels or on the wheels of one axle.
- I am not a supporter of individual changes in the type of shock absorbers or their stiffness by vehicle users. Crossbars for connecting the upper attachment points of the McPherson struts are available for sale with tuning accessories. Their use does not appear to be intentional. The operating parameters of the shock absorbers and the entire suspension system are optimally selected by the manufacturer and there is no need to change them. Do-it-yourself modifications can worsen the driving performance of the car, says appraiser Kazimierz Kubiak.
