Test Drive MOTO

Aprilia RST 1000 Futura

The first drawings that we caught a year and a half ago showed a motorcycle pulled up to the corners with a seat so strongly cut that it was already rather ugly. It was bumpy and cheap, like some kind of shock sofa from the factory workers.

Test. The motorcycle came to our house without suitcases on the sides, which of course is a first-class sin. Now we don't really know how they serve their purpose, whether they come with helmets and what the ride quality of a motorcycle with luggage is like. Otherwise, how can a couple go on a trip so that they, covered in trash, on a walk along the sea, do not look like some kind of bum during the move?

However, Futura had a nice enough and completely human comfortably designed King and Queen size seat, as the Americans call those large and sinfully comfortable double beds, where two can be rolled, and there is still room for the third.

However, let’s go back to the technique so that no one would accuse us of debauchery. Even though the real charm of motorcycling is that souls with the opposite sign ride together in pairs. That he could feel her seductive sails hemisphere right on his back. And let the warmth of her wrapping thighs remind him not to go crazy too much! For in the hospital, lying down, with weights through the bones, it is completely pointless to determine whether the nurses below are free. In short, the Futura is supposed to be a touring motorcycle with a sporty image.

Everything on the wrists

The Futura, I swear, is not a small motorcycle, as the seat is planted high and wide. If the driver is of a more bred variety (or lower than 175 cm) and clasped in a tight suit, he will squirm quite a bit before catching a completely safe feeling. The weight of the body forces on the wrists, the feet are relatively high and moved back.

From the driver's position, it is already clear that the Futura is most suitable for maximum medium-long trips, as well as a bend or two that you will be able to lay down to your knees. On longer journeys, however, the driver gets tired of the position. And not technique or speed. The motorcycle can cover a nice 240 km per hour, which is more than enough for a cruise.

The passenger sits hidden enough behind the driver's back that she should have no comment on the swirling wind or, God forbid, the forced posture of her legs. Exceptionally, this time mine didn't complain that its exhaust stinks! For the passenger, the Futura is comfortable, as it has low enough clamped passenger feet. They are not obstructed by the exhaust pipe, which is cleverly routed under the seat and on the floor just under the light. The design of this version is a bit unusual, but the lines of the motorcycle are therefore clean on both sides.

The design can be discussed with mugs of beer until the bar closes. The angular lines are really unusual and the trapping of the upper part of the armor around the lights is just hard to digest. Well yeah, let’s just say the moves are fresh? Martian? One would still somehow accept it all if only the rear-view mirrors were less protruding. And more transparent.

Technique to the people

The frame, nicely folded in aluminum, is very similar to the one with the RSV, which is among the best in its class. The geometric values are a bit less "sharp", the head of the frame is moved forward by 5 mm, but here one would not really look for any hair in the eggs, because the motorcycle rides very nicely, predictably and reliably.

Even in incline, if the driver brakes, the frame does not stage strange reactions, but maintains the inclination of the ride and the direction. The front forks are USD (upside down), are semi-adjustable and a good compromise between sport and comfort. The rear swingarm, however, is actually just a sleek aluminum swingarm with a center-mounted star-shaped aluminum wheel. Oh, that's nice. Precious!

A two-cylinder engine, known to all as Maka Gorenyakova, hangs in the frame. It is still of Austrian origin. It is the perfect tool for multitasking, and thanks to the Creator for being the first to use it for racing, because it showed weaknesses the fastest. But we do not know about them at all, because all Aprilia on the racetrack and in our hands worked reliably.

As such, the Rotax twin only has a cosmetic trim for touring use to make it more useful in the lower and mid-range. The clutch elements have been slightly softened to make the grip less rigid on the handlebars. And because the clutch is equipped with a pneumatic torque damper, you can shift gears abruptly without worrying about the two-cylinder engine stopping the motorcycle.

cosmetics

The first thing that catches your eye is the information-perfect and transparent, but roughly shaped very angular dashboard. It is clear that this set is obsolete. However, the motorcycle is solidly assembled. All plastic is nicely cast and varnished with sufficient quality.

The equipment is also of perfect quality. It has a center parking stand (do you know how safe such a parked machine is?) And also a side stand, a pair of large handles behind the seat, after removing the adjustable lever, lugs for attaching side cases and a large button on the left under the seat for easy rear tension adjustment springs.

The sinuousness of Slovenian roads shows that Futura has made a very worthy breakthrough into a segment dominated by the BMW R1100S and Honda VFR. It’s a pity that both competitors have “help” with the brake system: BMW has ABS, and Honda has interconnected discs, which also works well. Here is Aprilia's unfinished story. An experienced driver, of course, believes that he slows down well.

Futura enables fast cruising on highways as well as on country roads, as we have in abundance. It also maintains direction very well in two, as long as only the suspension is set and the tires are within safe limits. Otherwise, the devil starts pumping and dancing like some Ukrainian artist.

If you have to drive fast, it is still comfortable up to about 200 km per hour, then the wind starts to bother you. The driver also curses the insufficiently transparent mirrors. I may have missed something, but I want a safe drawer to put my phone in and, of course, a strong Kryptonite lock.

Rating: Aprilia has another motorcycle that attracts attention. A strong argument for is the fact that it is assembled on a well-known technical platform, so reliability and maintenance should not be questioned. It is conducive to a lively sporty ride and at the same time comfortable enough for two. It is still our opinion that such a motorcycle needs an electronic brake assist. ABS, in short.

Final grade: 4/5
