The history of Allroads began almost ten years ago, more precisely in 2000. At that time, the A6 Allroad, the soft off-road version of the A6 Avant, hit the road. Since then, Audi has firmly established itself in a more or less soft part of the market: first the Q7, then the Q5, between the new A6 Allroad, now the A4 Allroad, and then the new, smaller Qs.

It's also obvious that the Qs are more off-road than the Allroads (although none of them is an SUV, make no mistake), and the fact that even within the entire off-road family there are significant differences. off-road.

There is nothing new in the basic recipe - it is the same as it was in 2000. Based on the wagon version, which Audi calls Avant, the chassis needs to be finalized and raised, the car is equipped with an off-road look. , choose the appropriate "macho" engines and, of course, add a few pieces to the base package to justify the higher base price. A4 Allroad strictly follows these instructions.

It is (mainly due to the shape of the bumpers) two centimeters longer than the A4 Avant, and due to the edges of the fenders it is also wider (therefore the tracks are also wider) and, of course, due to the modified chassis and standard roof rails. for fastening the luggage compartment is also four centimeters higher.

Half of the increase is due to the greater distance of the car's belly from the ground - due to longer springs, to which the shock absorbers are also adapted. In this way, Audi engineers managed to reduce the car's lean in corners (to tell the truth: the A4 Allroad handles pavement very well), and at the same time, they managed to ensure that the chassis was not too stiff.

Combining this chassis with 18-inch tires, especially on short, sharp bumps, proves to be a good solution for passenger comfort. The rims are all road tyres, which is further proof that the Allroad is not designed for anything but rubble.

Admittedly, it works well on gravel. The torque is great, the Quattro all-wheel drive can send enough torque to the rear wheels, ESP can be turned off and a lot of fun can be had. Turbo diesels are usually not the most prone to this (due to the narrow rpm range used), but the three-liter engine in this Allroad is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (S tronic). This way, the shifting is almost instantaneous, so there is no turbo hole and excessive speed drop.

And while the transmission has proven itself in sporty driving, the leisurely city driving here or there may surprise you. Then it gets lost a little between gears, and then abruptly and jerkily engages the clutch. In all honesty, this has been the worst transmission experience of its kind in this group so far, but we would still prefer this gearbox to Audi's classic six-speed automatic gearbox.

The driver can influence the operation of the transmission through the Audi Drive selection system. It can regulate the response of the steering system on the one hand and the response of the engine-transmission combination on the other.

This Allroad Audi Drive Selec was on a rather long list of optional equipment: a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel (required), panoramic glass roof (recommended), rear window shade (if you have children, required), proximity key (required) ., belt replacement assistance system (release it silently, it's annoyingly sensitive), 18-inch wheels (recommended), Bluetooth system (urgent) and more.

So don't expect to come close to the Allroad 3.0 TDI Quattro's base price of just under 52k, better expect to go above 60 if you want more leather and the like, above 70. In benchmarks, the Allroad climbed to 75.

Is this price known? Of course. Interior materials are selected, manufactured and combined with high quality and taste, there are no details that would give a feeling of cheapness. Therefore, the feeling behind the wheel or in one of the passenger seats is excellent (of course, keep in mind that you should not expect miracles on the back bench), that the air conditioning works perfectly, that the audio system is just as good. that the navigation works smoothly and that there is enough trunk.

The engine noise is a little bothersome (make no mistake: it's much quieter than with more affordable cars, but could be a little quieter), but that's where the list of complaints ends.

Other than that: we've known for a long time that the Audi A4 is a great car (and its sales numbers back it up). Therefore, of course, it is logical to expect that it will be finalized and supplemented (in this case in the A4 Allroad) even better. And it really is better.
