Audi A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TFSI (155 kW)

Why? Simply because you won't be disappointed (which, by the way, is also reasonable to expect given the price). If the first convertible is a two-seater, perhaps a more spartan roadster, that may deter many people from continuing on that road route. Constant wind, noise, zero space and everyday uselessness are a fact in such cars, even if they are modern and expensive.

They can be a little more comfortable, a little less noisy, but the basics remain. On the other hand, the A5 Cabriolet is almost as useful as a coupe or even a sedan. True, the trunk, despite a decent 380 liters of space, requires careful planning, but if you have enough flat suitcases or soft bags, it has enough room for holiday luggage for a couple or even a family.

Forget about bikes and sun loungers - everything else shouldn't be a problem. And these 380 liters are available not only with the roof closed, but also with the roof reclined. This is where the A5 Cabriolet's advantage over convertible hardtop competitors lies: the boot is always the same size, and its accessibility is always the same. And you can also go on vacation with the wind in your hair.

Also for skiing, for example (yes, thanks to the good aerodynamics, this A5 Cabriolet will also come in handy in the cold): you fold down the rear seat and you can already load the skis in the trunk. ...

Otherwise, you will be able to travel far and the wind will be as long as you like. With just two passengers and a windscreen over the rear seats, this A5 can be a fully comfortable passenger with the roof down, but with the windows up. Even at high speeds, about 160 kilometers per hour and higher, there is very little wind in the cabin, normal conversation is possible, and the trip does not tire; However, the excellent audio system is more than powerful enough to suppress wind noise.

At Slovenian motorway speeds, the noise in the cabin is not much more than in a below-average mid-range car at the same speed – you will be able to talk to your passenger without raising your voice. It's like the roof won't fold. If you don't want to, you won't have the wind circling around your head. The aerodynamics are so good that you can ride with the roof down even in the rain.

Since we are stubborn in the Auto store, one Saturday evening we were returning from Primorsk to Ljubljana with an open roof (of course, along the old road), although storms had already begun in Razdrto. Neither rain nor spray from motorcycles in front (imagine their faces when they are overtaken in the rain by a convertible with an open roof) did not wet the interior at all - nature and movement only beat us in Brezovica near Ljubljana, combined with a rather slow column of 50 kilometers per hour ) and heavy rain hurts Audi's aerodynamics.

Of course, you can first lower all four glasses and increase the flow of fresh air between your hair, then lower the mesh from the wind and enjoy (if you like) blowing off your head. Otherwise, at city and suburban speeds, the rear seats will survive with the roof down, but if you plan on going faster, have mercy on them and close the roof.

Roof: three-layer, additionally soundproof, with a large rear window (heated of course) is quite competitive with solid roofs. The noise is only one shade more (especially noticeable in tunnels), tightly without defects, opens and closes easily. Just press a button between the seats and the roof can be folded electro-hydraulically in 15 seconds and closed in 17 seconds. And for this you do not need to stop, the car works up to 50 kilometers per hour, which means that the roof can be moved while driving around the city. Therefore, you can drive first and then fold or close the roof in front of or during parking. Extremely comfortable and welcome.

If you subtract the changes needed to transform the coupe into a convertible, the interior inside isn't much different from that of a coupe. It sits great, sporty low, the pedals (especially the clutch pedal) still suck disastrously due to installation and running too long, and the MMI system is still the best system of its kind at the moment.

There are enough boxes for small things, the box in front of the navigator (of course) is locked together with all other locks (so that the car can be parked with the roof down), and the sensors are transparent even in strong conditions. Sunlight.

Both the driver and passengers can only enjoy - even what the engine of this A5 Convertible is capable of. The 155-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine in this version is capable of delivering 211 kilowatts or 1.630 horsepower, which is enough to handle the vehicle's XNUMX kilograms. In fact, this whole feeling is misleading.

The engine likes to rotate at the lowest rpm (starting from 1.500 and below this number, like all turbodiesels and turbochargers, it is very anemic) and rotates smoothly and continuously until the red field on the tachometer. The drivetrain is time consuming (and so, let's say, third gear quietly pulls from 30 to 170 mph), and since the noise is low, the passengers have the feeling that everything is going slowly, as if the car has half the power. ... Even the driver can get this feeling until he notices that the ESP warning lamp is constantly on on slightly worse asphalt.

211 horsepower and front-wheel drive (and not-so-great tires, as evidenced by well-below-average stopping distances) is the recipe for turning the wheels into neutral (or very workable ESP). Quattro all-wheel drive would be the best solution, just as an automatic transmission would be the best solution (whether CVT combined with front-wheel drive or S tronic dual-clutch transmission combined with Quattro.) if the driver was not tormented by the impossible clutch pedal (and this is really the worst part of the car).

Despite the aforementioned bad tires, the A5 Cabriolet finds itself in corners, as the steering wheel is accurate enough (minus: the power steering sometimes hardens unpleasantly), the car is not too heavy, and the position of the steering wheel is soft enough to turn. it will still be fun.

However, the chassis absorbs the bumps under the wheels well enough to be a convertible, and at such times it feels like a slight shaking of the body, which is most easily seen in the interior rear-view mirror. The A5 has not become a pure two-seat roadster, and it shows. It is true, however, that in this area nothing lags behind the competition - quite the contrary.

But remember: the A5 Cabriolet is not an athlete, but it is fast enough, very pleasant and, above all, a comfortable travel convertible. Those who don't want to give up everyday car comforts because of the occasional wind in their hair will be delighted.

Face to face

Saša Kapetanovič: The Audi A5 Cabriolet is one of those convertibles where you will find a compromise between ease of use and pleasure. Choose a better quality acoustically insulated roof from the list of accessories and you will see that the above statement remains true. The test car's engine is the right choice for light cruising with dynamic cornering midspans. Don't look at a turbodiesel because it doesn't belong in this car. Like a cigarette in a supermodel's mouth.

Average yield: I'm curious that the A5 has no direct competitor at all. The C70 and Series 3 have a hard sunroof, which means there aren't many alternatives for the soft-lover. If possible, choose a more powerful engine, otherwise you will still succeed in full. The A5 Convertible is built for fun.

Overall rating (345/420)

  • The Audi A5 Cabriolet is not the sportiest roofless and not the most prestigious. It does, however, excel in terms of day-to-day use and how much time you can spend with the roof down, no matter the weather or speed.

  • Exterior (14/15)

The Audi A5 Cabriolet looks stylish with both open and closed roofs.

  • Interior (111/140)

There is a lot of space in the front (and in height), in the back the children will survive without problems. Impressive wind protection.

  • Engine, transmission (56

    / 40)

The sound comfort and sophistication of a gasoline engine is in itself, a fairly long-rated gearbox does not consume much power and at the same time provides less fuel.

  • Driving performance (55

    / 95)

The A5 Cabriolet isn't a sports roadster, and it doesn't want to be, but it's still a lot of fun for the driver.

  • Performance (31/35)

Enough power for all-wheel drive. A turbocharged petrol engine is a great choice, but the transmission must be automatic.

  • Security (36/45)

The safety of passengers is provided by safety arches and a bunch of electronics.

  • Economy

The price is not low and the loss in value is considerable. This convertible is not for those with a weak heart or wallet.
