Audi is testing two-way charging. But wait, another informal CCS extension?

Initially, we were looking forward to this information, but now we are worried. Another manufacturer – this time Audi – talks about testing two-way charging in its electric vehicles. The experiments, carried out in collaboration with the Hager Group, will allow the use of an electrician as an energy storage device.

V2G in Audi. Advertising or sensible product?

Audi and Hager Group discuss possibilities connecting an electric vehicle to the local power grid in order to use it, for example, as an energy storage device for a photovoltaic installation... Thanks to technologies known as V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), the car acts like a battery for the home.

Audi boasts that the tests used an e-tron model (pictured: e-tron Sportback, source) with "almost production" electrical installation. The car was connected to a wall box with a capacity of up to 12 kW and its own battery with a capacity of 9 kWh. Since the voltage levels in the installation and in the battery were the same, an additional converter was not required.

As far as we understand this kit, with a home energy storage of 9 kWh, the Audi e-tron is here the flower for the sheepskin coat, i.e. an unnecessary accessory that simply diversifies the photos. Perhaps that is why the manufacturer stipulates that the battery in the wall box is not needed for serial production.

Why are we worried? Well, bi-directional charging should be part of the standard, in this case CCS 3.0. Because it's part of the Chademo standard. If every manufacturer - Renault, FCA, Audi - uses their own extensions, the market will be a total mess. A home setup adapted to Renault's V2G may not be compatible with Audi or FCA. Car manufacturers will be pleased, the owner of the house is not very ...
