Used Audi A4 B8 (2007-2015). Buyer's Guide

The Audi A4 has been Poles' favorite used car for many years. What is surprising is that it is a handy size, offers a lot of comfort, and at the same time the legendary quattro drive can take care of safety. However, there are things you should pay attention to when buying.

Faced with the choice between buying a newer, cheaper car or an older, premium car, many people choose option number two. This makes sense, because we expect more durability, better engines and more comfort from a higher-end car. Despite the difference in age, a premium segment car should look like a newer counterpart to lower segments.

Looking at the Audi A4, it is easy to understand what the Poles like about it. It's a proportional, rather conservative model that may not stand out very much, but it also appeals to most people.

In the generation labeled as B8 appeared in two body styles - sedan and station wagon (Avant).. Convertible, coupe, and sportback variants appeared as the Audi A5 — seemingly a different model, but technically the same. We can't miss the Allroad version, a station wagon with raised suspension, skid plates and all-wheel drive.

The Audi A4 B8 in the Avant version still attracts attention to this day - it is one of the beautifully painted station wagons of the last two decades. References to the B7 could be seen in the exterior design, but after the 2011 facelift, the A4 began to refer more to newer models.

The most coveted versions are, of course, the S-Line. Sometimes in advertising you can find the description “3xS-line”, which means that the car has 3 packages - the first - sports bumpers, the second - a lowered and stiffer suspension, the third - changes in the interior, incl. . sport seats and black roof lining. The car looks great on the 19-inch Rotor wheels (pictured), but they are also highly coveted wheels that the owner will most likely sell separately or increase the car's price at the expense of them.

Compared to its predecessor, the A4 B8 is clearly larger. Its length is 4,7 meters.so it's a much more spacious car than, for example, the BMW 3 Series E90. The larger interior is also due to the wheelbase increased by 16 cm (2,8 m) and a width of more than 1,8 m.

Among the copies on the secondary market, you can find cars with a wide variety of equipment. This is because Audi has virtually no trim levels, with the exception of Allroad. So there are powerful engines with weaker equipment or basic versions retrofitted with a roof.

version the sedan had a trunk volume of 480 liters, the station wagon offers 490 liters.

Audi A4 B8 – engines

Yearbooks matching the B8 generation were the last to feature such a large selection of engine and drive versions. In the Audi nomenclature, "FSI" stands for naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection, "TFSI" for a turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection. Most of the engines offered are in-line four-cylinders.

Gas engines:

  • 1.8 TFSI R4 (120, 160, 170 km)
  • 2.0 TFSI R4 (180 km, 211, 225 km)
  • 3.2 FSI V6 265 hp.
  • 3.0 TFSI V6 272 hp.
  • S4 3.0 TFSI V6 333 km
  • RS4 4.2 FSI V8 450km

Diesel engines:

  • 2.0 TDI (120, 136, 143, 150, 163, 170, 177, 190 km)
  • 2.7 tdi (190 km)
  • 3.0 tdi (204, 240, 245 km)

Without going into too much detail, the engines introduced after 2011 are much more advanced than those before the facelift. So let's look for newer models with engines:

  • 1.8 TFSI 170 km
  • 2.0 TFSI 211 km and 225 km
  • 2.0 tdi 150, 177, 190 km
  • 3.0 TDI in all variants

Audi A4 B8 - typical malfunctions

Special care engine - 1.8 TFSI. Those first years of production had problems with oil consumption, but since these are machines even 13 years old, in most cars this problem has already been fixed. In this regard, the pre-facelift 2.0 TFSI was not much better. The most common failure of the Audi A4 four-cylinder engines is the timing drive.

The 2.0 TDI engines were chosen very willingly, but there were also high-pressure pump failures. The pumps contributed to the destruction of the nozzles, and this led to a rather expensive repair. For this reason, in models with high mileage, probably, what should have broken has already broken and been repaired, and the fuel system, for the sake of peace, should also be cleaned.

The 2.0 TDI engines with 150 and 190 hp are considered the most trouble-free.although they were introduced in 2013 and 2014. 190 hp engine is a new generation of EA288, which can also be found in the latest "A-fours".

They are also highly recommended 2.7 TDI and 3.0 TDI, which do not cause any problems even up to 300 km. But when they start to break down due to wear and tear, repairs can cost more than your car. The timing and injection system is also expensive for a V6.

Gasoline V6s, both naturally aspirated and turbocharged, are very good engines. The 3.2 FSI is the only trouble-free gasoline engine produced before 2011..

Three types of automatic transmissions were used in the Audi A4:

  • continuously variable Multitronic (front-wheel drive)
  • dual clutch transmission
  • Tiptronic (only with 3.2 FSI)

While the Multitronic doesn't generally have a good reputation, the Audi A4 B8 wasn't that faulty and the possible repair costs would be no more expensive than other automatics. Which means 5-10 thousand PLN in case of repair. Tiptronic is the most reliable gearbox on offer.

Multi-link suspension is expensive. The rear is mostly armored, and the possible repairs are rather minor - for example, replacing the stabilizer rod or one rocker arm. However, the service will work on the front suspension. Replacement is expensive, and for good-quality components it can cost 2-2,5 thousand. zloty. Brake maintenance, which requires a computer connection, is also expensive.

In the list of typical faults we can find Hardware failures at the start of 2.0 TDI - pump injectors, high-pressure fuel pumps, throttle valves fall and DPF clogs. In engines 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI and in 3.0 TDI there are failures in the timing drive. In 2.7 and 3.0 TDI engines, intake manifold flap failures also occur. Until 2011, there was excessive oil consumption in 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI engines. Despite the fact that the 3.2 FSI engine is very durable, ignition system failures can occur. In the S-tronic dual clutch transmission, a fairly well-known topic is the breakdown of mechatronics or the need to replace the clutches.

Luckily, the aftermarket comes to the rescue, and even offering near-original quality, they can cost half as much as we would pay at an authorized service station.
