President Biden will use his presidency to accelerate the production of materials for electric vehicle batteries. The goal appears to be to focus on the transition from petrol to electric vehicles and thus lessen the impact of today's high fuel prices.
The White House has announced that President Joe Biden will use the Defense Production Act to stimulate the production of materials needed to build electric vehicles. But that's not all. Biden also authorized the release of part of the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve to alleviate the situation.
Biden will increase the production of electric vehicles
The DPA was signed by President Harry Truman during the Korean War to allow the US government to prioritize the production of goods and materials ostensibly for national security. Its use gives the Biden administration more power to advance its electric vehicle program without congressional interference.
“In particular, the DPA will be allowed to support the production and processing of minerals and materials used for high-capacity batteries such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and manganese, and the Department of Defense will implement this authority using strong environmental, labor, and environmental standards. , public and tribal consultations,” the White House said in a statement. "The President is also looking at possible additional uses for DPA beyond minerals and materials to provide safer, cleaner and more sustainable energy for America."
Watershed to Accelerate Transition to Electrification
The DPA is the next big step on the Biden administration's EV agenda, and it could make a big difference in determining how quickly the shift away from fossil fuel vehicles happens. The administration has already pledged to spend $5,000 billion on a new national electric vehicle charging network, and Biden also said most of the federal vehicle fleet will switch to electricity sooner or later.
In addition to reducing US greenhouse gas emissions, all of these things would have the added benefit of reducing our dependence on foreign countries for energy, which would be a national security benefit.
