The coolant pressure indicator comes on when the engine is overheating due to insufficient coolant. So, can you safely drive with the coolant pressure light on? Short answer: it probably won't kill you, but it could spell death for your car's engine. An overheated engine can cause incredible damage - failed cylinder head gaskets, damaged pistons and valve stems, warped or cracked cylinder heads.

If the coolant pressure indicator lights up, what should I do?

  • First, stop immediately and turn off the engine.

  • Check the coolant level, but do not do this until the engine has cooled down. It usually takes about half an hour. If you remove the radiator cap or open the coolant reservoir before the engine is sufficiently cool, the buildup of steam inside the cooling system can cause you a very nasty burn.

  • If the coolant level is low, a mixture of 50% distilled water and 50% antifreeze can be added. In high temperatures and desperate situations, plain water is enough to get to the garage.

  • If your engine has temporarily overheated due to very hot weather or because you have been hauling a heavy load, it may help to turn on the heater and turn off the air conditioner. However, if the problem is due to low coolant levels, this is unlikely to help. Your coolant pressure light may also come on because your radiator cooling fan is damaged, your radiator is clogged, you have a bad water pump, your V-ribbed belt has broken, or your catalytic converter is clogged.

So, is there a security issue? Well, if your car suddenly stops on the highway due to sudden overheating, it can be dangerous. So, if the coolant pressure indicator suddenly lights up, pull over to the side of the road as quickly as possible. If adding coolant is all it takes to get to the garage, you can do it yourself or have a mechanic do it for you. But if the light is on and coolant is leaking out a lot, don't try it yourself, have a certified mechanic check it out for you.
