The electrical system of any car is equipped with special protective elements - fuses. By means of fusible inserts, the electrical wiring in the circuit of a particular consumer is protected from malfunctions and its spontaneous combustion is prevented. Owners of the VAZ 2101 should be able to identify possible problems with the fuse box and fix them with their own hands, especially since this does not require special tools and skills.

One of the important elements of the electrical equipment of the VAZ "penny" are fuses. Based on the name, it becomes clear that these parts protect electrical circuits and electrical appliances from high loads, taking on high current and eliminating the burnout of automotive wiring. Ceramic fuses are installed on the VAZ 2101, which structurally have a light alloy jumper designed for a certain current. When the current passing through the circuit exceeds the fuse rating, the jumper burns out with the simultaneous opening of the wiring branch. In addition to the protective function, fusible links are a kind of control element for malfunctions of vehicle consumers.
Faults and repair of the fuse box
The electrical equipment of the VAZ 2101 is protected by a fuse box of ten elements installed under the dashboard on the left side of the steering column. On the model under consideration, there is no protection for the battery charge circuit, ignition and start-up of the power unit by fusible links.
How to identify a blown fuse
If one of the electrical appliances has stopped functioning on your “penny”, for example, the stove motor, headlights, wipers, then first of all you need to check the condition of the fuses. This is quite simple to do by inspecting the parts for burnout. The fusible link of the released element will be burned out (broken). If you have a fuse block of a new modification, then you can also determine the health of the fuse-link by visual inspection.
In addition, you can use a multimeter by selecting the resistance measurement limit. The device will allow you to accurately determine the health of the protective element. For a failed fuse, the resistance will be infinitely large, for a working one, zero. During the replacement of the fuse-link or when carrying out repair work with the unit in question, it will be useful to check the fuses for compliance with the rating according to the table.

Why does a fusible link burn out
Not so powerful electrical equipment was installed on the VAZ 2101. However, during the operation of a car with electrical equipment, various malfunctions may occur. Quite often, breakdowns occur in a particular circuit, sometimes accompanied by a short circuit. In addition, there are other causes of damage to fuse links:
- a sharp increase in the current strength in the circuit;
- failure of one of the electrical appliances in the car;
- improper repair;
- manufacturing defects.
Replacing the protective element
If the fuse fails, it must only be replaced. No action is taken to restore it. To replace a defective element, it is necessary to press the lower contact of the corresponding fuse with the thumb of the right hand and remove the burnt fusible link with the left hand. After that, a new part is installed in its place.
How to replace the fuse box "penny"
The reasons for which it may be necessary to remove and replace the fuse box may be different, for example, melting of contacts and housing, less often mechanical defects as a result of impact.
Quite often, the safety bar on the VAZ 2101 is removed to be replaced with a more modern unit, which is equipped with knife protective elements. Such a node is characterized by higher reliability and ease of maintenance. Removal and replacement of the old block is carried out using the following tools and materials:
- open-end wrench for 8;
- flat screwdriver;
- a piece of wire for making jumpers;
- connectors "mother" by 6,6 mm in the amount of 8 pcs.;
- new fuse box.
We dismantle and replace in the following order:
- Disconnect the mass on the battery.
- We prepare 4 jumpers for connection.To install a flag fuse box, jumpers must be prepared
- We install jumpers in the new block, connecting the fuse-links together in this order: 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10.Before installing a new type of fuse box, it is necessary to connect certain contacts to each other
- Remove the plastic cover by prying it from above with a flat screwdriver.
- With a key of 8, we unscrew the fastening of the old block and remove it from the studs.The fuse block is held by two nuts by 8, we unscrew them (in the photo, for example, fuse blocks VAZ 2106)
- We sequentially remove the terminals from the old device and install them on the new unit.We reconnect the terminals from the old block to the new one
- We fix the negative terminal on the battery.
- We check the work of consumers. If everything works, we mount the block in its place.We mount a new fuse box in a shaky place

Fuse box repair
If a malfunction occurs in the safety unit, the normal operation of the “penny” becomes problematic or even impossible. In this case, you need to find the cause of the malfunction. The advantage of the VAZ 2101 is that only one safety bar is installed on this model. By design, it consists of the following elements:
- plastic case;
- fuses with holders;
- plastic cover.
Any repair work with the unit in question must be carried out in compliance with the following recommendations:
- the on-board network must be de-energized by removing the terminals from the battery;
- dismantling of any plastic elements must be carried out carefully, since there is a possibility of damage;
- in the process of replacing blown fuses, you cannot use elements of a larger or smaller value, as well as use wire or coins instead.
If, after installing a new fuse-link, it burns out again, then the problem may be in the following parts of the electrical circuit:
- wiring;
- consumer;
- generators or AKB;
- in the fuse box itself.
For the node under consideration of the classic Zhiguli, such a frequent malfunction is characteristic as the oxidation of the contacts and the protective elements themselves. A malfunction occurs in the form of a failure or interruption in the operation of a device. Eliminate it by sequentially removing the fuses and cleaning the contacts with fine sandpaper in order to remove the oxide layer.
Normal operation of the safety bar is possible only if all electrical appliances are functioning correctly and there are no defects in the electrical circuit.
After familiarizing yourself with the purpose, malfunctions of the VAZ "penny" fuse box and their elimination, it will not be difficult to repair or replace the node in question.
