BMW 335i Coupe Performance

Why? Because that's the way it is, with prominent carbon-fiber exterior mirrors and spoilers, silver decals just below the windows, and contrasting white rims (all included in the Performance accessories list), which is a bit cheesy. True, the sound coming from the exhaust pipe (again Performance) is also a little vulgar, but the driver can at least (again and again) enjoy it. The often reproachful looks of passers-by are a small price to pay, but without such an appearance, there would be far fewer of them, and they would not attract the eyes of the police. After all, it's about driving pleasure, not showing off, right?

Well, with performance-labelled accessories, BMW caters to exhibitionists and driving enthusiasts alike. All the external accessories are for the former, and for the latter, a new exhaust that attracts an almost eight-cylinder double-ended low-end gargle, accompanied by a cold-engine crackle worthy of thoroughbred racing. cars. You will find a video on our website and, believe me, it is worth listening to.

The Performance Accessory list also includes an Alcantara-covered steering wheel, which can be disappointing as it slips ugly in dry palms and is very likely to quickly become imperceptibly smooth and shiny with sweaty palms. Think of the same leather steering wheel instead.

Half-race shell seats are a must on the equipment list. You won't find a better combination of sporty restraint in turns and comfort on long journeys. The latter is even more important as this 335i can be a perfectly comfortable traveler. Even at high speeds on motorways, the exhaust is smooth and quiet, and the throttle is stable, and most of the noise comes from the extremely low-profile tires.

But the essence of this car is not in long journeys, but in pleasant convolutions. Such sticky potentials are painted on the skin, but unfortunately the combination of 225 front and 255 rear widths with M-chassis settings and no differential lock means a tendency to (too much) understeer, which can be shifted to neutral or oversteer. only with decisive interventions with the steering wheel and with the gas. The stiff tire hips and sturdy chassis have another drawback: On rough roads, this 335i loves to lose contact with the ground, jump and trigger safety devices (or the driver's sweat glands). But on the other hand, this is also part of the charm of such a machine. Under these conditions and at these speeds, a steady hand and sufficient driving skills are required. All the more incomprehensible is the decision of the Bavarians about the absence of a differential lock in any list of accessories. Bad, especially if you need longer side slides. It is possible and attractive, but without the differential lock, they are not very accurate.

It's good that the sound of the motor makes the driver happy all the time. First a rinse, then a growl and a howl, a clap of the exhaust pipe and a muffled thud as it moves. Yes, the dual-clutch drivetrain can be harsh in races with manual gearshifts and sports on, even when downshifting.

And again: move it to the D position and you will be driving with an extremely smooth automatic transmission. RPM rarely rises above two thousandths (if you manage to tame your right leg, which we doubt), and passengers (if the road is flat and smooth enough) will not even notice what kind of animal they are riding.

But your wallet will notice it. Let's say we failed to achieve a flow rate below 13 liters, the test stopped almost three liters higher. But remember, we are also (or especially) not immune to the delights of this combination of engine, transmission, chassis, steering and brakes. ... And we dare to say that anyone who tests such a machine and can afford it can succumb to them. And who, of course, is not ashamed that people look at him as a road bully, even when he is calmly driving.
