BMW Motorrad at CES 2016 - Motorcycle Preview

On the occasion of the opening CES in Las Vegas 2016 (scheduled from 6 to 9 January) BMW Motorrad presents two interesting novelties: i laser headlights for motorcycles and helmet with head-up display

Head-up display Casco con

In 2003, BMW was the first European automaker to introduce head display as an option for a BMW car. Well, today BMW Motorrad, always with a focus on road safety, is bringing this technology to motorcycles.

How? By applyinghead-up display sul casco... What can be shown on the display? All displays are freely programmable. However, to provide the best support from a security perspective, it would be preferable to view only useful and relevant information for the driver at any time.

View options include safety information: Motorcycle health data such as tire pressure, oil and fuel levels, speed, gear selected, speed limits, traffic sign recognition and imminent danger warnings.

But the most interesting thing concerns the future application of this technology: With futuristic V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) communication, information can also be viewed in real time, for example, to warn of imminent dangers.

In addition, the head-up display can also be operated from navigator... And at the same time a helmet with head display could record video thanks to the front camera. In the future, there may be a rearview camera that can work as a rearview mirror.

Display technology can be integrated into existing helmets without compromising driver comfort or safety. The operating time of the system, equipped with two replaceable batteries, is approximately five hours.

In the following years BMW Motorrad strives to develop this innovative technology in such a way that it can be adapted to series production, thus adding an additional element of safety to an already wide range of equipment.

BMW K 1600 GTL Concept with BMW Motorrad laser

BMW Motorrad For some time it has been devoted to the development and improvement of optical groups for motorcycles with the introduction over the years of adaptive headlights for cornering, LED daytime running lights and dynamic brake lights.

And, as is often the case, this development has received a synergistic effect with BMW vehicles.

In case of concept K 1600 GTL, and fari laser BMW Motorrad borrowed from the project of the BMW Group Automotive Division. The innovative laser technology is already available in the new BMW 7 Series as well as in the BMW i8.

BMW Motorrad has now adapted this proven futuristic technology for motorcycles. Laser headlights not only emit a particularly bright and clean light, but also emit a dazzling beam of at least 600 meters, double that of traditional headlights.

As a result, the safety of driving at night has been significantly increased, not only by increasing the range, but also by accurately illuminating the road.

In addition, laser technology guarantees a long service life thanks to its compact, robust, maintenance-free design. At the moment, this is still a very expensive technology and therefore difficult to apply in the short term on production bikes.
