Test drive BMW X1, Mercedes GLB, VW Tiguan: new heights

Let's see how the new model from Stuttgart will compete with competitors.

After people literally went crazy with tall SUV models, a new trend has recently been observed among cars of this type - the height and landing of many models began to decrease. However, this is not the case for the Mercedes GLB, which relies on the classic virtues of a functional SUV.

ABC. Finally, we can say that the Mercedes GL model range received logical and understandable designations, since the niche between GLA and GLC quite naturally took place in GLB. Are you sure you expected to read something more original? You're probably right, so let's pay attention to the originality of the car itself: for starters, it is angular and tall, unlike most modern SUVs, which look puffy like SUVs, but at the same time have a low roofline and sporty shapes. ... Externally, the GLB looks almost huge against the graceful figure of the BMW X1, and is more focused on the classic style that we find in the VW Tiguan.

Let's start with a few facts before the start of the actual competition: the BMW is significantly lower than its competitors, but at the same time much lighter than them - its weight is 161 kg less than the Mercedes, and 106 kg less. compared to VW. Logically, the X1's more compact dimensions mean a slightly more limited maximum load capacity.

In the humble opinion of our team, the true value of an SUV is, above all, functionality - after all, these models replace vans. But in fact, the arguments in favor of buying usually look different.

GLB up to seven seats

For this type of car, the ability to carry a large amount of luggage is important. A good VW should give way to a longer Mercedes, which can accommodate up to 1800 liters if necessary (BMW 1550, VW 1655 liters). In addition, the GLB is the only model in the test that can optionally be equipped with two additional seats, so it gets the highest possible rating for its functionality.

If you're looking for seven seats for the Tiguan, the 21cm Allspace is the only solution. The X1 doesn't have a third-row seat option, but its interior flexibility is absolutely van-worthy - the rear seats are adjustable in length and tilt, the trunk has a double bottom and an additional alcove, and the driver's seat can also be folded down into the right place for long items.

What does VW have to offer against this? Drawers under the front seats, remote unlocking of the rear seatbacks from the trunk and additional niches for items in the dashboard and ceiling. In terms of ergonomics, the Wolfsburg model is not entirely rosy. Apparently, the model is infected with the Tesla virus, so VW is trying to eliminate the maximum number of buttons through control from touch screens and surfaces. For this reason, many functions are controlled only from the center console screen, and finding them takes time and distracts the driver from the road - unlike BMW, which, with its turn-push control, is as intuitive as possible. The Mercedes performs relatively well, although its voice command appears to be more reliable than using the touchpad. In GLB, you can simply state your desires, and in most cases the system manages to understand you.

As a rule, for Mercedes, the emphasis here is on maximum comfort. In this respect, until recently VW was considered the benchmark in its class, but it is time for the Wolfsburg model to give way to another parameter. The GLB wears on bumps with the same smoothness as the Tiguan, but, unlike it, almost does not allow itself to swing the body. In this respect, the model resembles the big limousines of the brand, and it is for this reason that the feeling of calm that it gives when driving is practically unique of its kind at the moment in this class. Obviously Mercedes would make more sense to compare to the Tiguan Allspace, but unfortunately VW was unable to provide us with such a car with a suitable engine for comparison.

We also have to admit that the GLB's smaller counterpart, the GLA, would be more apt to compare to the X1 - especially in terms of driving behavior, as the BMW exhibits a strong sporty character. This is especially noticeable in road dynamics tests. But the effect is quite noticeable in areas with a large number of turns, where the Bavarians SUV model is much more maneuverable and more active than its two opponents. Unfortunately, excellent handling and dynamic performance comes at a price - for example, the steering wheel sometimes reacts nervously, for example, in strong crosswinds. The stiffness of the suspension also affects the comfort of overcoming bumps, which is definitely not at the highest level. To be honest, we like the sporty styling of the X1, but the truth is that despite everything, the model remains an SUV - its weight and especially the center of gravity are too high to be compared with a sports car in good conscience. .

Highly Recommended Diesel Engines

For comparison, we have chosen the only really recommended engines in terms of fuel consumption - diesel engines with a capacity of 190 hp. and 400 Nm. The latter value is extremely important for vehicles weighing from 1,7 to 1,8 tons, which often have to carry substantial luggage and tow attached cargo. Even base diesels with a power of about 150 hp. and 350 Nm is a good decision - the key point is that at this weight, high torque is absolutely necessary. If you want to have a petrol model, it makes sense to focus on maximum performance, which, however, will not please you with its cost. Until hybrids become more numerous, more diverse and more efficient, diesel fuel remains the smartest choice for midsize or high-end SUVs.

BMW is the lightest and most economical model at 7,1 liters per hundred kilometers, while Mercedes is the heaviest and spends 0,2 liters more. In fact, it speaks volumes about the efficiency of the three-spoke model, as VW posted an average consumption of 7,8 l/100 km despite the lighter kilograms. The higher cost costs the Tiguan many price points, including its CO2 emissions estimate, which is calculated based on the measured cost of a standard section for clean motorcycle driving and sports. In addition, VW only complies with Euro-6d-Temp standards, while BMW and Mercedes are already Euro-6d compliant.

It is interesting to note that, despite its advanced age, the Tiguan is absolutely modern in terms of multimedia equipment and assistance systems, the range of which includes such details as automatic distance control and the possibility of semi-autonomous control. Nevertheless, in terms of quality, the model took third place. Perhaps not surprising for a car that faces a generational change, but for a champion that for many years has been considered the benchmark in its segment, a loss is a loss.

Apparently, Mercedes' chances to lead the class are great. The GLB is still the newest car in testing, as evidenced by its safety equipment. It is in this category that he is the first, ahead of even the X1. In terms of performance, BMW came in second, mainly due to disappointing VW brake test results.

However, in the final ranking, the Tiguan still comes in second place, as it is significantly more affordable in all respects of the X1. On the other hand, BMW boasts the best warranty terms. As usual, when evaluating the price, we take into account the important parameters for each of the models. For the Tiguan, for example, dynamic steering and adaptive dampers, and for the X1, 19-inch wheels, a sports transmission, and electrically adjustable front seats.

The best or nothing

When evaluating costs, GLB shows the worst results, but, on the other hand, Mercedes traditionally has high costs - both for purchase and for maintenance. The new SUV fits in well with the company's slogan "The best or nothing," and something like that always comes with a price. On the other hand, the GLB delivers on its promise and is the benchmark in the compact SUV class in this comparison test.

EVALUATION

1. MERCEDES

The GLB wins convincingly with the best driving comfort and most flexible interior volume in the test, and offers the richest safety equipment. However, the model is very expensive.

2. VW

Despite its age, Tiguan continues to amaze with its qualities. It loses points mainly in brake and environmental performance - the latter due to higher costs.

3. BMW

The solid suspension costs the X1 valuable points in comfort, so it's only second place. The big advantages are the flexible interior and the powerful and really economical drive.
