"Fast start". Increase the chances of starting the engine

What does a “quick start” for an engine consist of and how does it work?

Three main chemical compounds and their various derivatives are taken as the basis of a quick start:

  • propane;
  • butane;
  • ether.

The first compositions that appeared on the market combined mainly these flammable and highly volatile substances in various proportions. However, numerous laboratory studies and tests of "quick starts" from different manufacturers in real conditions have shown that these substances alone are not enough to safely start the engine.

Several factors came into play. First, ether vapors and some other combustible compounds used in winter starting aids are prone to detonation. And detonation, especially during a cold start, can cause significant damage to the engine. Secondly, vapors of ether and liquefied gases actively wash out the lubricant from the microrelief of the cylinder walls. And this leads to dry friction and accelerated wear of the cylinder-piston group.

Therefore, light lubricants are added to modern tools to help start the engine in winter, which are able to penetrate into the cylinders together with gas vapors, as well as additives to reduce the likelihood of detonation.

The principle of quick start is very simple. Together with air, the agent enters the cylinders and ignites in the standard way: from a spark of a candle or by compressing air in a diesel engine. At best, a quick start charge will last for several working cycles, that is, for one or two seconds. This time is usually enough for the main power system to fully work, and the motor begins to function normally.

Mode of application

Applying "quick start" is quite simple. It is necessary to apply the agent to the intake manifold. This is usually done through the air intake. Ideally, you will need to disconnect the manifold air supply from the air filter housing. This will make it easier for the agent to enter the combustion chambers.

Each composition from different manufacturers indicates the time interval during which the composition must be sprayed into the intake manifold. Typically this interval is 2 to 5 seconds.

After injecting the agent, it is necessary to install the air duct in its place and only then start the engine. You can use the product in a row no more than 3 times. If the engine does not start the third time, then it will not start. And you will need to look for a problem in the motor or try other ways to start.

In diesel engines, turn off the glow plugs and depress the gas pedal all the way. You can start the gasoline engine in the usual way, without additional manipulations.

Despite the lubricating additives, overuse of the "quick start" agent can adversely affect the engine. Therefore, you need to use it with caution.

A brief description of popular compositions and reviews about them

Let's consider several “quick starts” for the engine that are common in Russia.

  1. Start Fix by Liqui Moly. One of the most popular in the Russian Federation, but at the same time and expensive means. Produced in aerosol cans of 200 grams. The cost fluctuates around 500 rubles. It contains a package of additives that protect the engine from possible negative effects when using the product.
  2. Mannol Engine Starter. Also a well-known composition that is in demand in the Russian markets. For a bottle with a volume of 450 ml, you will have to pay about 400 rubles. The gases of this "quick start" have excellent volatility and help to start the engine well even in severe frosts. However, the package of anti-corrosion, lubricating and anti-knock additives is not rich. You can use this tool no more than two times in a row.
  3. Starting Fluid Company Runway. Inexpensive tool. The average price for a bottle of 400 ml is around 250 rubles. The composition is traditional for inexpensive "quick starts": a mixture of volatile gases and the simplest lubricating and protective additives.
  4. "Quick start" from Autoprofi. An inexpensive tool, the cost of which is an average of 200 rubles. The volume of the balloon is 520 ml. Contains liquefied natural gases, ether and lubricating additives. Among the cheap compositions for cold start assistance, it is in the lead.

Motorists generally speak well of winter starting aids. The main plus that almost all drivers note is that “quick starts” really work. Negative reviews are mainly related to a lack of understanding of the root of the problem (the motor does not start due to a malfunction, and not due to the ineffectiveness of the product) or if the instructions for use are violated.
