Kia Sportage 2.0 VGT

The Koreans again applied the famous Sportage frequent repair recipe. The latter has brought so much novelty to Kia's bland SUV that we can almost call it a new generation. But this one will appear within a year, and it should be the green light for anyone looking for the inexpensive car that the Sportage is at the moment, if we mean the competition, no doubt about it.

Already in testing four years ago, we discovered that the Sportage is not the sportiest soft utility vehicle (also called SUV), so we can only confirm this after testing an updated version. Competition, especially the Volkswagen Tiguan and Ford Kuga, has taken the Sportage even further away from the sporty category.

However, the Kia SUV behaves very reliably and predictably in corners, and the four-wheel drive, which is not influenced by the driver (the electronics distributes power between the front and rear wheels), interferes with driving so well that the driver will not even notice it.

The ESP stabilization system is also not rough, it's just a pity that it is not in the basic version of the equipment. We would criticize the agent for that. Drivers accustomed to dynamic driving will first notice the Sportage's good grip, but later on they will sooner or later be amazed at the Sportage's slow weight transfer in such "opposite" cornering combinations.

The body could not follow the fast maneuvers of the front wheels. . So sport is not that kind of sport, it's just finding a car for leisure. Large but unlisted in its class and endowed with hooks and drawers, the trunk with an otherwise off-road high loading height, the expandable rear bench can be easily divided into thirds and thirds, which is designed to carry sports equipment.

It is also very useful to open the tailgate glass separately, but here the joy is spoiled by the threaded roller, which is very inconvenient to jam or release through the glass when the tailgate is closed. As a recreational vehicle, the Sportage is also suitable due to the greater distance between the body and the ground, which allows you to drive to the top of a hill (say, on a snowmobile) or to deliver a pillow all the way to the shore.

Despite its off-road appearance and more pronounced protective body edges, the Sportage is not a true SUV. It is shod with road tires that contribute to good driving comfort on tarmac and cushion the impact of potholes in the cart rut, but you won't dig too much dirt with them. Despite the center differential lock found on the Kia.

What about the other part of the name, age? Age, age, era, time. ... a real English-Slovenian dictionary. If we humans get slower and less alive with age, the Sportage is the opposite. Its turbodiesel has developed to an exemplary power of 110 kilowatts (150 "horsepower"), which, with good movement, dictates a fast pace at the command of the driver.

The engine has enough power even when fully loaded, torque is easily recruited on descents. Due to the high torque (304 Nm between 1.800 and 2.500 rpm), the driver can be lazy and rarely reach for the gear lever of the six-speed gearbox, which moves from slot to slot a little harder, but always accurate.

To take full advantage of the engine's power, it is necessary to go from 1.800 to 4.000 rpm, which requires very frequent use of the gear lever, which you can leave completely alone and enjoy driving with the Sportage at around 1.500. rpm

This is how the Kia SUV maintains speed perfectly and follows the column. The only drawback of the 130-liter turbodiesel engine is its volume, and here, if anywhere, its years are known. At highway speeds (2.800 kilometers per hour on the Sportage speedometer, when the tachometer already reads 90 rpm in sixth gear), this is already too loud, and it is best to go in sixth gear at a speed of about XNUMX kilometers per second. hour.

At the time, it also boasted a flow rate of less than seven liters. In the test, the measured consumption was higher, as we also drove a lot in cities and highways, which requires about ten liters of thirst for the heavier and less aerodynamically less efficient Sportage. Some competitors are less wasteful. Since the Sportage is only available with this turbo diesel and a 104kW 2.0-liter petrol engine, our recommendation is clear and loud: the XNUMX CRDI.

Behind the wheel, the Sportage's history is completely SUV-like: thanks to the taller seats, visibility is excellent, and the large side mirrors also prove to be very helpful when turning the steering wheel. Side wind is not a problem for the Sportage, nor is the height of the sills, which can stain the pants on some soft SUVs.

The years are best known for the interior, which has otherwise received new gauges and other improvements. To control the on-board computer, which does not know the current consumption, it is necessary to press an unlit button Travel between the sensors, the grip of the leather and heated (best equipment) seats is poor, despite the fact that the best equipment lacks radio buttons on the steering wheel, the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but on the test she never moaned.

We were also worried by the fact that the rear side windows did not fold completely into the door, but on the other hand, we were thrilled to change the slope of the spacious rear bench. This makes the Sportage one of the most rewarding SUVs around.

The Sportage is an interesting soft SUV. It is not the most sporty, but very comfortable and useful. Many buyers can also be convinced by the seven-year (or 150 thousand kilometers) warranty.
