What are scutching tools and fixtures covered with?
Scutch crests and combs are usually plated with yellow zinc, often giving them a yellow-gold appearance.
The yellow zinc coating helps stop corrosion by creating a barrier and, in a pinch, a protective layer. This layer wears off before the steel corrodes. Zinc is a natural barrier to water, so if water doesn't get on the steel, it won't corrode.
If the comb or ratchet driver is not zinc plated, they will corrode at a much faster rate, since there is nothing to prevent moisture from contacting the steel surface. |
