What happens if you press the gas and brake at the same time


The simultaneous application of the gas and brake pedals is often used by professional racers for controlled entry into tight turns, for drifting, for skidding or slipping. Also, experienced drivers sometimes resort to this technique, for example, when braking hard on ice.

If you look, then it is on this principle that the anti-lock braking system - ABS works. As is known from the course of physics, if the wheels suddenly stop rotating, then the braking distance will be much longer, and the anti-lock braking system is used just to reduce the braking distance - the wheels do not stop rotating sharply, but only partially block, thereby increasing the contact patch of the tread with the road coating, the rubber does not wear out as quickly and the car stops faster.

However, to use such a technique - simultaneously pressing the gas and brakes - you need to understand the dynamics very well, you should not press the pedals completely, but only gently pressing and releasing them. In addition, not everyone can manage to move their left foot to the gas pedal so quickly or press two pedals at once with one right foot.

But what happens if you press the gas and brake sharply and all the way? The answer depends on many factors:

  • drive type - front, rear, all-wheel drive;
  • the speed at which the simultaneous pressing was attempted;
  • transmission type - automatic, mechanical, robotic double clutch, CVT.

Also, the consequences will depend on the car itself - a modern one, stuffed with sensors, or an old father's “nine”, which has survived more than one accident and repair.

In general terms, the consequences can be described as follows:

By pressing the gas, we increase the flow of the fuel-air mixture into the cylinders, respectively, the speed increases and this force is transmitted through the engine shaft to the clutch disc, and from it to the transmission - gearbox and wheels.

By pressing the brake pedal, we increase the pressure in the brake system, from the main brake cylinder this pressure is transferred to the working cylinders, their rods force the brake pads to press harder against the disc and, due to the friction force, the wheels stop rotating.

It is clear that sudden braking is not reflected positively on the technical condition of any vehicle.

Well, if we simultaneously press the gas and brake pedals, then the following will happen (MCP):

  • the engine speed will increase, the force will begin to be transmitted to the transmission through the clutch;
  • between the clutch discs, the difference in rotation speed will increase - the feredo will start to overheat, it will smell burned;
  • if you continue to torment the car, the clutch will “fly” first, followed by the gears of the gearbox - a crunch will be heard;
  • further consequences are the saddest - overload of the entire transmission, brake discs and pads.

It is worth noting that often the engine itself cannot withstand loads and simply stalls. If you try to experiment like this at high speed, then the car can skid, pull out the rear axle, etc.

If you have an automatic, then it will be approximately the same, with the only difference being that the torque converter will take the blow, which transmits torque to the transmission:

  • the turbine wheel (driven disk) does not keep up with the pump wheel (driving disk) - slippage and friction occur;
  • a large amount of heat is released, the transmission oil boils - the torque converter fails.

Fortunately, there are many sensors on modern cars that completely block the automatic transmission in the event of such situations. There are many stories of experienced “drivers” who accidentally pressed both pedals (for example, a bottle rolled under one of the pedals and the second pedal was automatically pressed), so all that happened was a smell of burning or the engine immediately stalled.
