What should I do if I lost my vehicle title?
The loss of documents is a common occurrence, you can often see announcements in the press like: “The borset with documents in the name of Ivanov I.I., who found a request to return for a fee, disappeared.” We have already told on our website Vodi.su what to do and how to recover certain documents. The technical passport of the vehicle, or abbreviated title, does not apply to those documents that the driver must have with him. Although no one forbids you to carry it with you, especially if you travel by proxy. From the documents you should have only:
- your driver's license;
- car registration certificate;
- CTP policy.
Now, if you lose them, then you are even forbidden to drive your car somewhere.
PTS is needed for various actions with the car:
- passing technical inspection;
- car registration or removal;

You can also write a statement to the police, but, as people who have had to deal with our valiant police say, this is a dead number, because:
- they won't find anything anyway;
- you will have to spend 2-3 months of your time;
- you will need to write an explanatory note why the TCP disappeared.
Based on this, it is better to immediately contact the traffic police department, and not necessarily where your car was registered. Write an application in the prescribed form. Be sure to indicate that the TCP disappeared under unclear circumstances, and you exclude the possibility of theft.
Of course, you need to have a lot of documents with you:
- your civil passport, military ID or any other identity document;
- driver's license;
- STS, contract of sale or power of attorney;
- CTP policy.
The department will give you a form for writing an application and an explanatory note.
The cost of restoring the PTS
For 2015, the cost of restoration is 800 rubles. However, you need to understand that the TCP number is entered on the registration certificate, so the STS will also be changed for you, which is another 500 rubles. Thus, for everything together you will need to pay 1300 rubles. Attach the check for payment of the state duty to the package of documents.
If desired, you can completely re-register the car, that is, get new license plates. It will cost 2880 rubles. This option should be considered if there are serious suspicions that the TCP fell into really bad hands.
Recovery under the new rules should not take more than a few hours. Although it can take up to five days, depending on the workload of MREO employees. Please note that you can safely come to the MREO with your car, because if the inspectors have any doubts, you can present the car here at the inspection site to verify the unit numbers and the VIN code.
After some time, you will be given a duplicate of the registration certificate and a new STS. From now on, you can safely go for inspection or put the car up for sale. Your old TCP will be invalidated, and its number will be entered into the database, respectively, not a single fraudster will be able to register a car using it.
